Ive heard some people say that some promoters and other companies won't even look your direction if you arent a member of ASCAP or another likewise organization. I know that basically ASCAP kind of protects an artists rights or something, but whats the real deal on these guys? What are they all about? I went to check out their website and look into signing up but on their sign up form they asked for my Social Security number and I got scared and ran away quick like.

hey uladine,

without goin into a 10 paragraph response, let me just say that if you plan on collecting song writing royalties from your copyrights you need to join either ASCAP< BMI< or SESAC.......

I would go further to say that whoever told you that people won't look your direction if you are not affiliated with a PRO (Performing Rights Organization - ASCAP BMI or SESAC) they are full of baloney (balogna).

All that means is that YOU get paid when your music is performed in public. The promoters don't. The managers don't (unless they own all or some of your publishing) so what would be their motivation to require you to be affiliated with one of the aforementioned societies? It really is there to benefit you.
I could maybe see that publishers want you to be affiliated.
In the case of ASCAP, you have to have had something performed in public to be a full fledged member, so maybe to some that would be an indication that you have enough talent to be considered. But then, I could go down to a coffee house and sing about the size of my dong, and there you go - I have written something and performed it in public - doesn't mean I have talent. BMI is not the same as far as requirements to join (I think) The only other thing I can think of is that being affiliated also may show some business savvy on your part.

But don't get me wrong, if you have written and copyrighted material that is being performed in public - you should sign up.
Don't worry about ASCAP asking for your SSN - ASCAP is older than social security - that should prove some legitimacy.
