Taking the slow road
anyone notice this or do i have a lemon?

i have to place it far away from the mic

the signal is ok, but i still have to check it out on monitors.

I've had the same issues

At times with the TubePac units. It seems that they are very susceptible to ground loops. Other than this, I've always been impressed with the boxes - especially as DI's for bass and acoustic guitar.

I know that's not much help - but I think that it's a recognized issue at times with this ART product.

i'm using it as a second recording location for ideas, i'll have to take it into the main home studio room where i know the ground is stronger and try it there.

it sure was a good deal...did you ever return one for that problem?

No..

I've kept all of mine - interesting, though, as we ordered one for the bass D.I. at church and it arrived DOA...absolutely nothing but noise out of either output (XLR or 1/4"). ART is replacing it quickly, but it was strange given that three I have never had an issue of the kind.

The grounding thing is elusive (and troubling) - I've only experienced it twice...once at church, and once at an outdoor show. Other than this, they've been solid on pretty much any instrument that I've tried them on...I particularly like them as an insert on the acoustic guitar channel strip as the compressor seems to really work well evening out the signal without stripping the guitar's brilliance. Obviously, they kill as a bass D.I.

If you're experiencing it every single time it is near a microphone - I might suggest returning it for another unit. That would be maddening.

well, it's for my second recording spot in a different room and there's a closet right next to me so i stuck it in there and routed the cables under the door and the hum is much lower.

the signal is clean and i like the limiting and being able to really push my recorder up close to the top before clip

...still have to try it with a known good ground

i'll contact ART and see if they think it's defective if it still is bad w/ good ground

If the box hums (and physically vibtrates) but the signal is fine, it is the input AC transformer vibrating. You can open the box, unbolt the transformer and put rubber washers between the tranny and the chassis. Don't forget to run a earth ground wire from the tranny to the chassis because you will seperate earth ground from the tranny to the chassis with the rubber washers.
