I have an ART Tube MP OPL that I plan to use to record vocals and acoustic guitar with a large-diaphragm consenser mic, as well as to warm up a direct electric guitar. I'm using a Korg D-12 stand-alone digital recording deck that has both XLR and 1/4" inputs. My question is, which output do I use on the tube pre--the balanced XLR or the unbalanced 1/4"--and for which application?

Try the unbalanced 1/4" into a 1/4" line in for all recording jobs first. If you are getting too much noise or interference thru the unbalanced I/O then try the balanced out into the mic pre with the gain on the D-12 in as low as it will go. You will be getting only the sound of the outboard preamp in the first case, and in the second you will be recording only a minimal amount of the D-12's preamping.

No prob. As one of my old bosses used to say: 'thank you for thanking me'.
