Would one of these be a better choice? The ART is a bit more expensive at $300 (vs around $160 or so for the dmp-3). I've read bad stuff here about ART, but this looks like a lot for the money.

Better for what application?

If for a vocal strip I'd go for the ART. They make perfectly acceptable stuff for the beggining market. They may not be as quiet as more expensive stuff, nor as clear sounding, but works well.
The DMP-3 would be my choice for acoustic guitars.

I believe the ART is just a single channel? / with compression?
The DMP-3 is a dual channel? bare bones that is it. But very clean.

What do you want out of your choice?

Thanks for the reply Tom.

My needs are very basic. I'm just experimenting with recording music at home. I need it to produce demo-quality multi-track recordings of male vocals and acoustic bluegrass instruments - primarily 5-string banjo.

I just bought an AT 4040 mic to replace the little plastic stick thingy that came with my sound card, and was considering purchasing one of those little ART Tube MP's for $50. After reading a lot of messages here, I decided to look at a *small* upgrade for the pre.

In that case I would definitely get the DMP-3.

I also do primarily acoustic based recording (Celtic/country/Jazz) and I always appreciate how clear and quite the dmp is. The ART is decent (I have one of the studio MPs) but is a little colored and Rock sounding. It has a little more self noise, but is a good second pre for some apps.

Here is my web site. If you ever have any questions on anything I have, feel free to ask. There is a link to some music clips I have done using the DMP-3.

The ART Pro is a step up from the MP series. I've had units from both series and the Pro is dramatically better. So you're best off doing a direct comparison between these units.

The Pro channel got a great review over at prorec.com a while back. These used to sell for $500. I love my DMP3 for acoustic guit, but if I'd probably go with the Pro channel or an M-audio Tampa if vocals were going to be a big part of my demos.
