Any ideas? using audacity and I have it set to record left and right channels but only the left channel works and it shows up on buth the left and right track.

How do you have it connected?

That is, working backwards, at least to the preamp (I'll assume you've got mics connected to both channesl of the preamp, and they're actually amplifying something):
- What are the inputs to the computer?
- What cables are plugged into them?
- Where are they plugged into the preamp at the other end?

Also, I'm not sure I follow the question. When you say "only the left channel works," it's not very clear what you mean by "works" (or, more to the point: "doesn't work," insofar as that applies to the right channel). Apparently the right channel of Audacity is working, since you say it's recording something.

Right now just a mic to the non-working right side- am58 (no phantom) im getting a signal to the box but its not going throuigh the usb to the track (i guess not anyway). So mic to dual amp and usb from dual to comp to audacity.

If I connect the mic to the left input it records in Audacity.. in the right... nothing

Do you have a channel in Audacity assigned to the Right channel of the DP? Typically a track will default to input 1 (Left). I do not know Audacity so I am generalizing.

I thought I did. what program do you use... perhaps I try the demo?

I actually got it to work in reaper! I wonder why it works on that prog? I hate FL studio--- it's soooooooooooooo non-intuitive! Honestly, on a scale of 1 easiest to 10 impossible/FL studio, what would you rank reaper?

Doesn't sound to me like it's the preamp...more like the settings in Audacity, which can be tricky to set.

If you want to be sure it's not the preamp...plug your mic into the right channel, take the output of the right channel and feed the input of the left channel. Bring up the gain very lightly on the left --- you're sending Line level from the right into a Mic level input on the left.

If you get signal from the mic, through the right channel and into the left...it's not the preamp.

Thanks for everbody's input... in the end, it was a Vista thing- I had no problems on XP. Reaper worked because there in an option for kernel streaming as an alternate input.
Peace
