I am not sure how to disable the onboard sound card other than not choosing it in the control panel sound settings.

What are onboard graphics and a GPU?

The onboard sound might be configurable in the BIOS, when you start the PC it will ask you to press a button to enter setup. Be careful here, look around in the menus for AC97 Sound, if you find it disable it and save. Dont get carried away and change anything else.

If you want to find out if you have onboard graphics, look at the place you screen connects to the PC, if its in the same block as your sound and usb sockets, its onboard rather than a dedicated GPU.

Using WDM driver mode seems to have taken care of the problem. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

If WDM solved the problem then try installing ASIO4all, it uses WDM to simulate ASIO and should give you better performance than WDM.

Dude. It's a sonar thing.

I had nothing but problems when i ran sonar. It was actually killing my creativity. iwas spending more time fiddiling with computer settings services, drivers, tweaking, nudging, global this, global that, ram this, page file that, that i lost track of the song and the flow of my music alltogther....

So i dropped it all for well over a year. Went back to it after a year and same thing. Drop outs clicks pops, freezeing everything. I was defeated by something that was supposed ot be a "superior" product. So i figured the problem was with me.




Swtich to Reaper. Thats what i did and its been smooth sailing so far. It so effin slick.

My solution.

Bail on Sonar. You'll agree with me later.

Before you go any further, download and run Memtest overnight. This will help you determine if your RAM or mobo is having problems.

I would then uninstall/reinstall Sonar and all related drivers for your interface.

Sonar and Win7 are very picky about how you install drivers. Do not disable onboard audio in the BIOS. Set your interface as the default audio hardware in Windows.

My initial guess is that you have a bad stick of RAM. Memtest will sort that out for you.

I really do appreciate all the responses. I thought the problem was licked when I switched to WDM, but then found out my sound card wouldn't work with iTunes or whatever plays video off the net. So I went back to Sonar figuring I could just reset the driver mode when I recorded and otherwise leave it on ASIO. That got iTunes back on line, but I never could, even with Sonar support, get Sonar to work again. Sonar support said they were out of ideas and blamed my computer.

The computer would not let me uninstall Sonar and HP support, after 90 minutes decided I should run a recover - wipe off the hard drive and restore it to what came out of the box. Did that. The very next thing I did was put on Sonar and the sound card drivers. Looked like it was working until track 3 and it all started again. Another 90 minutes with hp and they gave up on me, but wanted $60 to send me to the next level tech support. Mind you, I have had the machine for less than 3 months! I did not know what else to do so I paid the money and am now waiting for some updates to load to continue with this. I'm sure whaterver happens here will not be HP's fault.

Does it let you mix down and burn a stereo CD?
Are there effects plug ins like a compressor, reverb, etc?
How much?

On my Mac I used Deck, and always regretted that choice because no else knew anything about it. I got Sonar because that seemed to be popular. I figured it must be pretty good.

Incidentally, dont be afraid to try buffer sizes as high as 2048, the low latency monitoring feature on your card will take care of you, you will just mess with the effects after you do your tracking.

I am running an HP desktop as my music computer, not many problems.

Definately try reaper, you have nothing to lose.

Dont pay any more money to HP, giving money to bored CS people staring at screens is like wiping your bottom with George Washingtons.

Next time you get into whatever sound program you decide to use, hook up an interface and set the buffer level to the highest available setting, its not going to hurt you, I promise, its just worth a shot.

I have experimented with buffer sizes to no avail. Reaper is looking better. I spent money for Sonar, but I guess I just have to let it go.

True that! I had that problem with my laptop, the stick that came with it was bad! Nobody knows what % of crazy inconsistent comp probs are from this, but thats just because (almost) nobody runs memtest! even if you get a brand new computer, run memtest!

I had conflicts with Pro Tools and Reason, and add Windows Media Player. M-Powered PT 8 would have a cow if I had booted it up after having run a Reason 4 session and not slaving it to PT. Reason 4 used ASIO drivers. PT did not. (PT 9 now supports them). I called M-Audio and was told to disable the ASIO drivers in Reason 4. Problem solved there, but occasionally it shows up during Windows Media Player so I can't use that anymore. It's been a PITA to go through and make sure nothing is using ASIO drivers on that machine -- until I bite the bullet and do the $1400 upgrade to PT9 -- don't ask because there are other components involved.

Problem is with the Blackjack drivers. Mackie has not updated their asio drivers since the Blackbird and blackjack have been nout. check on the Mackie forums, lot of people on PC having trouble with the Mackie asio PC drivers. People using Mac have had no problems with the Blackjack. this is on Mackie so stay on them. I'll be joining you because my mackie blackjack will be here Monday and I am using an HP laptop. I am anticipating trouble already. mackie needs to get on the ball and update their PC asio drivers to work properly with the blackjack.
