Hey all its my first time posting here,
My name is Mike, I am also a member from the VSplanet, and I own a VS-2400, and I look forward to posting here and helping out.

I am interested in updating the front end of my VS-2400 and I was looking at the Apogee Mini me.

Does any one own one of these, or heard one of these, please tell me your opinions?

I am looking for a Mini-me or a Rossetta and 2 Grace 101's, but the Rossetta and 2 Grace 101's are double the money, but is it double the sound quality?

The Mini-me without USB goes for 1,075 and the Rossetta and 2 Grace 101's are a little over 2,000.

Please tell me your views?

Also I am thinking about getting a Rode NTK condensor microphone for vocals to use with the Pre/ A-D?

Your opinions would be well aprreaciated?

Thanks Mikey Ace.

i'm just relaying a message that came from the magic don juan of gear pimping...the mini me has the best sounding converters apogee has come out in a long while. and the pre's are usable

so basically the conversion on the mini me blows the rosetta and the pre's on the mini me and grace 101 are prolly equal., but this is thru word of mouth....like always YMMV :D

Mikey,

Is there a reason you are not looking at a Grace Lunatec V3? Its 2 pres and conversion for around 1500.00. I understand its preamps spank the Mini-me.

Well, as someone who actually owns and uses a MiniMe I can confirm that the converters sound better than the Rosetta. I would also say that the preamps a far more than "useable", they're downright good. The compression & limiting in the MiniMe are also very good (though not very comprehensive). I have not heard the new Lunatec V3, but I do have a Grace 101, and it by no means "spanks" the MiniMe's preamps. The 2 have slightly different sounds, and the Grace might be prefereable for certain unique situations (like distant micing with a ribbon mic) - but there is no clear winner between the 2 in most situations.

I have 2nd hand feedback that says the mini-me is a killer device. I have been mulling over getting one of these.

Check out the Lucid 9624 A/D

Mikey,
I'm shopping for converters as well.....Apogee MiniMe was my first choice, but then I saw the Lucid 9624. I've read nothing but great reviews and have received several first hand users accounts about the unit. Nothing but glowing praise for the sound quality. Also, I understand Mytek is coming out with a similar product/similar price soon.

The Lucid 9624 A/D converter is in the $800 range.

Has anyone compared the Grace Lunatic V3 to the Apogee Mini me?

I would like to use one of these units as a front end for my VS-2400 for a good vocal sound using a Rode NTK. I will also be using them for stereo keyboards, and acoustic guitar, and a DI for guitars, but my main priority is for vocals with the Rode NTK condensor.

Which one would have the better sound quality for what I need it for?

Is the pres in the V3 the same as the Grace 101 or are they better, how do they compare to the Mini-me pres?

Is the Converters in the Grace better than the Mini me?

Which has the overall better cleaner, detailed sound?

The Mini Me I can get for 1,075 at sonic sense, and the Grace Lunatic V3 I can get for 1,425 at sonic sense.

Thats a 300 difference, what will give me the better overall sound.

Thanks,
Mikey Ace

Could you get by with JUST a mini me and a computer or laptop?

Assuming you just needed 2 channels? My only gripe is i don't see a way to connect monitoring speakers. I guess i'd have to buy another sound card as well? Like a delta 44 or something.

The MiniMe has a headphone out which can take its signal from the input or the USB buss, and is continuously variable between the 2. It can easily be adapted for powered monitors.

Can someone please compare the Apogee Mini-me to the Grace Lunatec V3?

Is there a huge difference in quality?

Which one sounds better?

Is the Grace V3 worth the extra $400 dollars?

The Mini-me has the better converters and OK pre-amps.
The V3 has the better pre-amps and OK converters.

What is better to have when making a quality recording?

I really want to improve my vocals.
I will be using a Rode NTK microphone.

Which one will give me the better sound for the money.

Thank you, Mikey Ace

digimus.
So i could either listen to what i was tracking through headphones at the same time as the song on my computer, for say vocals.
And i could also plug in my monitors using a few adapters to split the stereo headphone out and make it 1/4'?

That would be theoretically awesome. Get a couple of nice SD condensors and a nice LD condensor and i'd be set... And portable!

Are you sure the mini me has DACs so that you can listen to wave files that have already been recorded? Why do apogee sell the mini dac if all you need is the mini me (do you need both)?

I've been told by a bud that the Grace Lunatec mic preamps are not the standard issue Grace sound. Still, they're good but different.

Hey Mikey,

I think you answered your own question.

Word on the street is the Grace has slightly better mic pres, and the min-me slightly better a/d conversion.

But all-in-all, both are supposed to be very good, hi-endish units capable of delivering great sounds, so you probably couldn't go wrong with either one.

My question is, What is better to have to make a better recording.

Better A/D converters and allright Pre-amps?
or
Better Pre-amps and allright Converters?

Just an example:

1) Two Studio projects VTB-1's pre amp plugged into a Apogee Rossetta 96 Converter , or

2) Two Grace 101's preamp plugged into a Art DIO Converter.

What would give a better quality sound.

I am looking to get better quality then my VS-2400 Mic pres/AD converters.

I am also looking to better the vocal quality using a Rode NTK.

Apogee Mini-me or Grace Lunatec V3?

Your opinions?

Thanks,
Mikey Ace

I'd say group 1...w/bad converters u seem to lose all the good stuff the good pre is doing for you...

Yea, but neither one has "bad converters." Just different levels of "very good."

Your question is a little redundant. Why don't you just ask us whether it's better to have girl A, who's great in bed, cooks, and likes football, or girl B, who is just as good in bed, is a slightly better cook but doesn't like football quite as much as girl A or girl C who is . . .
