Well, I'm on my way towards building my "6-pack" of API 312's.

I picked up these on e-bay.

They should be here by mid week!

Brent and his gang are still working on the Audix 35102's for me too.....

Nice....I have gear envy:mad: silly yes but sooooo true;)..LOL..Seriously very nice!

I've been lusting after these for a while now. I can't wait to get them in the rack and try them out. I hear they are legendary on drums, but I'm not a drummer, and my current room TOTALLY sucks for drums, but I'll throw the piano at them, and some other acoustic instruments as well.

Then I'll post something in the clinic and let you all know what I think.
But the main idea of buying/using them is to cover the drum kit in the new studio.

Bet they will sound great on elec. guitar too!

I never liked the API's on guitar amps, but maybe I'm in the minority. For guitars, I've always been a Neve guy or some variation of. I like a slower slew rate, and not as much mid range emphasis either (need more in the lows). My favorite guitar combo is the Great River NV combined with Brent Averills 1272, after countless trials of experimentation. NV is salt, Brent's is pepper.

Who said anything about guitars? FWIW, I think they're the balls on guitars... one of my favorites!! In the repetoire of 'stoopid guitar recording tricks' is to put 3 mics on the cabinet with an ambience mic... all going into a single API 3124MB+ and coming out with a nice blend... the 312 (4) ain't all that far away from what you're talking about having Brent make for you... with the exception of it having a 'mix buss'... which Brent is more than qualified to add to the pogrom... you might want to ask him about that.

Best of luck with it.

I've gotten some great sounds from an AC30 using an SM57 through an API pre (3124+). Stupidly simplistic, but perfect tone.

Michael- Why did you go with the 300s over the 500s? It seems like the 500s have a few more features due to the bigger size for around the same price.

Tex - You mean this one:
http://www.apiaudio.com/512.htm

The only difference I could see was the front XLR plug, and the LED meter. Neither seemed important to me. Oh, and I think the 512c has 65dB of gain, and the 312 has 45dB... I think. ?

But anyway...
They came in the mail today!!
They look smaller than I thought they would. I mean, I knew they were a 3U height, but the width is small. Around 1" to 1 1/4".

Gotta hook 'em up now.....

Yeah, the 512's usually have DI's and more filter options. I don't know if there is any significant difference in tone between the two.

Congrats on the new pres. Let us know how they sound.
