That helps a lot. Thanks for your time, it looks like things are going to be a little cramped in there.

The only question now is

What effect will the 36" make on the wall unit.

John?

Thanks again

Ryan

A couple of options....

Reduce the size of the desk. A standard office desk is 30" deep X 60" long. Most desks are not this large, you could use a smaller one. Is the column 4" in diameter? and if you gave an exact location of it, I could draw it in the exact place... you might pick up enough space to allow for a 48" unit instead of 36"

Here is the floorplan with a smaller desk. Here you have two 48" units.

hmmm

It looks like that will be my best move.

That would allow a lot of things that are cirrently a problem in the room to be resolved.

The beam actually is supported by that 4" pole which supports my livingroom floor. So as much as I would like to get rid of it, I think my wife would not appreciate the move.

Thanks again

Yeah, "No touchie" when it comes to the structure. Beams and columns get to stay put.

Joe

Joe - couldn't you get rid of the column this way??

cheers

Sure,

That would work. Just strengthen the walls just under the I beam. Not a problem. I was thinking about things here at work (on campus) where people start wanting to knock out support columns to "make a larger room" or because it is in the way. Nevermind the 13 floors above them. :-) Go figure. This place has my mind closed to modifying anything related to the structure... liability reasons. That's fine with me... keeps my job easy :-)

I saw your DIY wall units and was wondering if they could be used as below to make a sound box.

I know nothing about studio design, but my father and I just ordered the equipment to record his music. We want to use your Wall unit design to make a box that can be assembled and taken down.

Could this work?

Thanks,

Joe

I am going to ask this question as a new thread.

Thanks,

Here are a couple of renderings of Jonothon's studio...

A kind of plan view. Like the roof's been taken off.

Holy Shit!!!
NICE renderings!
What s/w are you using????

Wanna render mine??

Chuck, awesome rendering!!! dude, sweet!

Hey, it's getting nice in there, you'll have to come by sometime. By the way, interior dimensions are 50' x 25' if you want to do it to scale.

Call me if you want to visit, we're weeks away now, and it's coming out great.

this is such a cool thread....Could I get my room (in progress) rendered? What would you need as far as dimmensions go..?

Micheal,
I'm modeling mostly in Autocad. Rendering in 3DStudio. If you have a 3D Acad model, PM me and I'll tell you where to send it.

Jon,
Thanks for the invite. Will call later in the week. If I get over there, I can nail down the configuration a bit better as well as dims. :)

Hey ChuckU, My carpenter did a drawing in another program (something lighter than auto cad I think) anyhow ,he emailed me the file and it was a .DXF file. I couldn't open this on my MAC, but I was wondering if you were familiar with it....if Auto Cad could convert. I'd really like o have our room rendered as well, be glad to pay dor the service...

Cajonezzz - Autocad will convert a DXF file.
At the command line type DXFIN, and autocad will prompt you for the file.

Michael,
Got the 3D. Nice job. I'll get back to you.

Cajonezz,
PM me so I can look at the dxf.

Jblaven,
I'm sorry I took over the thread. Looks like you know what you are doing.

Joe - I'd do it like this with the side walls in the same treatment as the wall units I described at my site.

cheers
JOhn
