Anyone know which mics Dre used to produce 'The Chronic 2001'???

I'm sure no one knows but who knows?! (The phrasing of that sentence was weird... I'm hearing the X-Files Theme in my head... Dii-Dii-Dii-Dii-Diiiii Di di di... :D )

Peace,
Beathoven

My understanding of Dr. Dre's signal chain around that time: Sony C800G mic into a Neve 1073 preamp. Also: SSL 8000 console and a Studer A827 tape machine.

One or two people I know tell me that as far as that particular mic vibe they consider the Sony to be very "Japanese" sounding and prefer the Rode Classic for this sound.

That's the signal chain I read he used in the EQ magazine article last year. And though I haven't priced them this week, the Sony mic retails somewhere in the $5k range. Hafta cash in my 401k.
Peace out!

am I wrong in not really looking at Dre as an engineer?

Don't get me wrong....I respect what Dre has accomplished. Both with Death Row, with snoop, eminem, and himself...etc.

No doubt the man "got the beats" - but when i think Dre, i never think of him caring or knowing too much about what mic is used - but taking the opinions of engineers and just hearing "what he likes"?

If he is truely involved in the engineering standpoint then I will be duely impressed.

It always gets to me when i see all of these rappers on MTV cribs, and everyone of them has "the studio" - though most are like, a PC...maybe an HD based recording box, and some keyboards....I just always doubt they know how to really use any of it.

Same way most of them have expensive lavish grand pianos - I *know* it's just furniture ;)

Dre or Snoop one actually had a pretty nice looking home studio though, as I recall?

they probably know a whole lot about engineering. But then again Black people like to flaunt their stuff with lavish toys. Don't let the black folk fool you.

I know DRE says he ALWAYS uses that sony for vocals, along with the SSL board and 2 inch tape....that'a all I remember:(

As far as DRE the engineer is concerned, he is every bit the engineer your favorite is. He records all instruments. He has a funny way....he finds the sample he likes to make jam with...say, a funkadelic song. Then he has an actual house band who plays the sample as a band.....just jamming it or switching it up some or whatever. He then will somethimes sample his band and switch THAT up!

Wierd, I know.

I also know he takes great pride in being a top engineer in his field, often telling how every not you hear on record was played, not just lifted.

Pick up that MIX article if you get a chance....it's quite informative as DRE is quite intelligent and truely underrated.

BIATCH!:D

Yeah, while Dre's function with Death Row was primarily a producer who wrote and arranged for other artists as well as himself, he is a producer who apparently first acquired engineering chops. I believe he has the cred to ably occupy either of those chairs. We all know which one pays better, though.

As a person who has sat in on a DRE session, I can verify that he uses that Sony mic and the Neve pre. Oh, and always ANALOG tape. Ah, good old 2"!

I will assure you; Dre is very much so involved in the engineering process. He does have a production team to carry out a lot of the keyboard programming but the ideas are mostly from his head.

and PS....WHAT do you MEAN he don't write his LYRICS? Please, dude! Who DOES?

sheesh....

well "the beats coming from his head" - that isn't engineering...that is production...

But, from what i am hearing he is a good engineer...good to know.

I'm really looking forward to the new Eminem album....Dre really did a great job with him.

I think Dr. Dre has 2x MXL 603 or 2x ECM 8000 for overheads and accoustic guitars, a MXL V67 for vox, and a couple of SM-57s for guitar cabs, snares and Eminem...... Maybe he even dished out the cash for a ATM Pro 25 for his kick.... These are the best mics around, so why shouldn't Dre have them?

Not writing one's own lyrics is something of a no-no in the hip-hop world. You've lost all respect with true hip-hop fans if it gets out that somebody ghosts for you. Eminem, for one, writes his own lyrics (and also most of the lyrics that D12 spits).

I was commenting on what wes480 said. It sounded like he was dissing rappers or something. Don't get me wrong either, I have a slight love for hip-hop, but I absolutely hate eminem.

What about cincinnati? Cincinnati is hardcore! Didn't you hear about them riots? :)
