Anyone know the thread I'm talking about? Pertains to compression and then gating

A few weeks back I read a thread with information that is potentially useful to me now. I didn't think much of it then, but this guy was talking about his newfound control over snare hits by using compression to raise the dynamic hits and then using a noise gate. I'm mixing a fast punk project and his specifics could really help me out right about now. Does anyone know the thread I'm referring to? If not, can anyone help me out? I'm trying to dramatically raise the level of the snare hits while decreasing the bleed of the kick and hi hat the snare picks up so I can slap on a noise gate and have great control over the track. That was his thread in a nutshell.
 
Although he says 'compressor he appears to mean a expander' (low ratio gate) ahead of the compressor. Generally you'd want to keep the comp or limit after the gate so the gate sees as much contrast as possible.
