Although the Yama 16G has graced these pages a lot in recent weeks (understandable since its so new), I'm wondering if anyone knows of an already established discussion-support
group targeting 16G users. Or, if necessary, would anyone care to join me in setting one up?

I ordered my Yama today ($999, Musicians Friend), and I'd enjoy
sharing thoughts with anyone else now working with this DAW, especially as we become more and more familiar with it.

Thanks,
J.

$999.00 at Musician's FIEND??? i called them today and they quoted me $1099.00!!! what gives??? well i'll be damned and what the hell and all that!:)

it's probably only a matter of time before an AW16G forum shows up at this site:

http://www.socialentropy.com/aw4416/

at first i dismissed this unit as a CHEAP "AW" throw-away,....an attempt by Yamaha to steer customers away from cheap multitrackers made by Boss/Roland and Fostex. i've since grown to be pretty impressed by its solid build, plentiful dynamics controls and versatile features. i plan to give it another EXTENSIVE demo-ing this weekend at my local "megamusicmartretailer".

there are a couple of things that MOST concern me about this unit. i've seen NO mention of an "UNDO" function. i ALSO wonder if the sample pad data is backed "along WITH the song data" when a CD backup is done. hmmmm.
well, anyway,..i still think its a COOL little multitracker,..especially since i found out that "SCENE AUTOMATION" is built in (as well as MIDI automation).

:D

Cratinus, I received the $999 price because MF's "Best of 2002" catalogue listed it on the back cover. I'm sure you could mention the catalogue (saying your dog ate it), but I should mention that the catalogue "expires" tonight (Oct. 31). BTW, I found the same
price by emailing another store (Music123.com, I think) a few weeks ago--I don't know if the price still holds. Also, I think it's musiciansbuy.com who has the $1099 price but also throws in
a $100 Yamaha monitor system and headphones as freebies.

Good luck,
J.

I'd be interested in an AW16G group..

Can we get homerecording to set one up?
I know there are yahoo group features,
and probably lots of similar places
but this seems like as good a place as any..

Yes, there is an undo/redo feature,
up to 15 deep. It also does a redo
(undo the undo).

And, yes the audio data and everything
is all saved to CDROM when you make a backup of a song. What's also nice is that
this backup is a standard iso format CDROM, so you can then also read/copy
the song backup file onto your PC hard drive for extra safe keeping.
Each song appears as a aw0000nn.16g file. I suppose you could even share those files via internet but they are BIG - I have a
work in progress 4 minute song of about 5 tracks, and the backup is 350 meg already!

I know you guys who already ordered the aw16g are not going to like this but I got 2 price matches- one for $878 and the other beat their price and will let it go for $870.Both have free shipping. I would also love to see a Yamaha recorder forum. Can't believe it's not already here!

AW16G price

Where did you find these online????

I would love to see a dedicated forum on it too.

Please let us know where those prices are from. I'm seriously thinking of buying an AW16G next week, and that extra money saved sure come come in handy!

Dinsdale and kktk,I had www.music123.com price match altomusic.com's price of $878 and the salesman (Todd Miller ext. 1155) told me he would actually beat altomusic.com's price. He told me $870 with free shipping. The $878 price at altomusic did not come with free shipping. At this point I smiled a big grin!.I have found that music123.com will really deal with you to get the sale.Mine will ship out Mondayof next week and I am jonesing bigtime for that bad boy. I don't think you will find them any lower than that but let me know if you do. 30 day low price gurantee you dig :)

Thanks Fuzzy Dice. I didn't even check the price at altomusic.com, I just emailed music123.com the price of $878 and they emailed me back and they said they could give it to me for $865.99!! Not bad! So, then I was talking to a friend at work about what I was getting, and he told me his good friend works in the pro audio dept at the guitar center nearest to me...so, he calls him up, introduces me, and his friend says he'll beat music123's price! This will work out perfectly, because now I get the return-in-30-days deal and I don't have to worry about shipping back the unit if something goes wrong. Hooray for friends or friends!

They were out of new AW16G's (they only had the display left), so they're having a new one sent in from another guitar center so I can have it by Friday.

I'd also like to thank you, Fuzzy, for saving me some money while outfitting my new home studio. I owe you a dinner, at least.

As an update--If any of you recall, I recently received my aw16g in an open box, with no protection from those UPS soccer players.
The unit works fine (I love it, if that's possible), but I was unhappy with MF's response when I emailed them about their shipping procedures of this relatively expensive unit. MF offered only to extend my return rights to 90 days--nothing more, such as the offer of a new (factory fresh) unit.

In contrast, Music 123 is sending another unit, double-boxed and guaranteed fac-fresh, for $135 less than MF's price. Not bad at all.
Thus, I feel a strange sense of satisfaction while I'm packing up my "old" 16g to return to MF later this week and am contemplating where I'll what I'll drop the savings on. Unfortunately, there are always too many possibilities for spending saved money, aren't there? Maybe I should just invest it for old age.

Thanks again for all who have shared your experience to help others, like me.

Wishing you happiness through pristine recordings,
J.

Dinsdale and jeffree you are welcome.Jeffree if you are in Memphis how does Corky's BBQ sound? :) If you are not, just shareing tips and giving help with the AW16G will be enough.By the way,Music123 just reduced the price for me to $842.71.But I bought a couple of mikes by price matching and he took the slack out of the AW16G.So this leads me to believe they can go this low for the AW16G if your a really really smooth and determined talker.

OK, Fuzzy, Corky's it is... whenever I get to Memphis. And if you get to Santa Barbara, then we'll try Woody's BBQ. Thanks again.

No more price haggling for me--I'm ready to get back to recording whenever I can find the time. Always a problem for all of us, eh?
And speaking of recording, after skimming through the 16g manual for a couple of days, I have already laid down a simple
multi-tracked tune and burned it to CD. Simply amazing quality for such a relatively inexpensive DAW. Coming to it from a Tascam Portastudio, I just can't believe how wonderful it sounds, including my first attempt at sampling the load drum loops. Wow.
I feel almost like I'm back in a real recording studio here.

Before I split, let me just take this message back to the start of this thread--let's stay in touch (anyone reading this) as we develop our aw16g skills. In fact, I'd suggest that as soon as any one of us finds a good 16g discussion group (or starts one?), let's announce it on this site so that we can all get on board. I'd really enjoy sharing our experience as we become more proficient on this great little DAW.

Now, back to recording some music, which, after all, is the point of all of this work... yes!

Best,
J.

P.S. Saw the Pat Metheny Group here last night, and now I've lost nearly all confidence in my musical abililty. Sheet.

Jeffree.I just added you to my buddy list. The discussion group will happen soon i know. These AW16Gs are selling like hotcakes from all the different music stores Ive talked to.I Talked with Jake at Humbuckermusic.com today and the Yamaha Rep just happened to be at his store and he told Jake the effects in the AW16G are actually way better quality than the AW4416.Wow! Just makes me feel all the better on my decision.

I agree that we should share whatever we learn with the AW16G. I can setup an AW16G discussion group fairly quickly if anyone is interested. If homerecording.com is planning to set one up, that's cool, I'm not trying to take visitors away from this site...but, working for an ISP, I can get domain names and hosting for free, and I've been wanting to start working on a new website...

Yeah, I think I'm gonna set one up...if anything it will be a temporary solution until a bigger, better site starts one up :)

Cool Dinsdale.I'm in like Flint.(rest in peace James Coburn)

Yeah, that sucks Coburn is dead...I knew he wasn't gonna last much longer.

Count me in, Dinsdale. By the way, I wrote to "Dragon2," the moderator for some of these groups, about creating a new aw16g group, but it's been more than a week with no response.
If anyone else cares to try, let us all know what happens.

Thanks,
J.

aw16g

I hope you get the group set up. I am new to digital recorders, recorders for that matter and I sure need advice. I bought the aw16g and I really like it but the learning curve seems steep.
I' ve been able to lay down some multiple tracks but have had some problems with mixdown.
Anyway its good to hear from other users.

It would probably have to be a general Yamaha forum for users of various Yamaha equipment or DAWs on this forum.I think Crantinus could be right about http://www.socialentropy.com/aw4416/ but they haven't posted any news on the home page since September.Makes me wonder. And Jeffree might just pull it off also.Anyways, we will get an AW16G users forum somewhere come hell or high water. :)
