MADE OF SANDALWOOD
First version
Second Version
My band just wrote a new song. We are still pretty much learning it but decided to do a semi-live recorded version of it. Tracked it in 4 hours, mixed in 2. It was my first real attempt at vocals with this band, so apologies if any of the phrasing/tones suck, I'm still getting the hang of this. I have posted the first mix of this from last night (which is extremely quiet and lacking in some highs), and am uploading a version I just did by limiting/compressing with Reaper. I'd appreciate input on the mix/song!

Aw, no one likes heavy or gloomy music?
*Bes a sad bear*

Pretty good tune...I like this type of music. Reminds me a bit of Crowbar. The second mix seem to be pretty mid heavy...drums get lost a bit for me. You might need to eq the mix before you compress it...try a little less mids.
Other than that, I like the tune itself. Just needs some more tweaking. You might need to remix before doing any final compression...there just seems to be some buildup in the mids that make the drums seem buried. Good job on teh vox for that style. They fit pretty well.

Hm... I guess a bit of Crowbar influence did make it in there. I've been listening to Lifesblood... a lot lately so it apparently had an effect. The only reason I did the compression is because we had already done the mix while ear fatigued and it would have been an hour drive to do another mix. Otherwise I would have slapped some better EQ on there, but at the time it seemed like the highs were almost overpowering. Lack of sleep/overexposure to the song took its toll I guess. Anyway, thanks for listening and giving some feedback.

Not bad at all.:)

Personally, I hate the vocals, sorry.:o Then again, I am not your target audience.:D I cannot understand the words, I cant even understand if its an actual language.

The tune itself is pretty cool. Some interesting musical stuff happening.

Awww really? You can't understand any of the words? I tried to enunciate a lot of it so it'd be somewhat intelligible. Oh well. Thanks for listening :)

Dont pay much attention to me, I am an old classical musician.:(:D

I do like the tune however, its pretty cool. That style of singing is more and more popular HERE these days, I hear a lot of it in the clinic. Different strokes for different folks.;)

your vocals remind me a lot of From Autumn To Ashes' old screamer dude..... well recorded anyways he wasnt that great live, but either way it sounds awesome, pretty nice on the first mix, but the bass drum and snare are buried... you could give that snare a little high end and some low mids, and bring that and the kick up in the mix.

sounded pretty good...had a bit of a Pelican/Mastodon vibe to it.

Keep on keepin' on

Thanks dude, we started this band with the hope of being a better Pelican (our drummer doesn't, ahem, blow) and I guess some of that feeling is still there. Kind of trying to move more in the Callisto/Cult of Luna/Neurosis direction, but I appreciate the Pelican comparison. Thanks for listening!

Errr I don't know what to say besides oh god, really? *Loathes FATA*
Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely boost the freqs on the snare, as that was the thing I had the biggest problem with in this mix and my stereo doesn't give the best picture of how everything sounds.

I can't really give any input beyond what has already been said here. I like it though, I'd agree with the Pelican comment...maybe with a bit of Isis thrown in for good measure. Nice.

Great sounds. I'm not into the vocal style at all, but am digging on the guitars. I'm digging the song all around, man. Very nice indeed.

7 strings? What's the guitar and guitar rig?

How about the bass?

...It feels much too long.

Nope, 6 strings tuned to B.
My rig is an Epiphone LP Sparkletop into a Boss GT8 into a Peavey Windsor into a 1960A cab. Other guitarist's rig is Gibson LP Studio into a Boss GT8 into a Laney AOR Pro 100 into a Hellatone 60 cab. Bass is DI from an Epiphone Ripper re-issue.
The part with just the bass is still incomplete so that may be contributing to why it feels too long... it's funny because this is about 3 minutes short of being our longest song. I guess it just comes with the territory in this type of music. It's really easy to write a long song and not realize how long it is until you've recorded it.
