I just got my SM7 in and have been testing the 2 out. If there is any interest I would just do a little talking in the 2 different mics, maybe something on the sax, unlikely, but possible. Just wanted to see if there was interest first.

...I'd be very interested in a recording of MY voice on both mics...oh yeah, recorded in my home studio also (so I can compare them with my Heil PR40)...for reference sake, ya know...thanks!...that's real nice of ya!... ;)

...on a more serious note...how are you liking the SM7?...and how do you think it differs from the RE20...which do you prefer...

You, know messing around with some sample recordings so far, I think I am liking the SM7 better with my voice. I was going to record something new for you guys here, but I will just post what I emailed to a friend of mine. She happens to like the SM7 better. It does sound more polished/refined?? More professional with my given setup. Keep in mind these are recorded through my ProjectMix preamps, not the best, not the worst, but sounds pretty good to me. The gain is almost mmaxed when recording vox, but when it comes to singing I don't think the gain will be too much of an issue.
Re20
SM7

I really would like to sell one of these to go for a nice condenser as well. I have a problem just keeping things and building. So, I will be considering.
What do you think?

nice

I like the SM7. . .but then, I use RE20's everyday and have grown tired of the sound. . .

I'd be very interested to hear these mics on a sax since I consider buying the RE20 to record my tenor sax. Can you tell me about your experience?

Cheers!

I think the SM7 sucks. You should sell it to me, I'll dispose of it.

:)

Based on those two clips, the RE20 is better. I don't like the proximity effect on the SM7. The RE20 is better in that area. That's just one example.

Respect Kidvybes!

Tell me sup'm, why did you choose the PR-40 over the PR-30 and how does it sound? I'm still thinking of getting one, but I heard that the difference between the sound of the two mics isn't that much different. Did you get the chance to make a copmparison?

How do you like the PR40 and have you compared it to similar mics? Oh and check your PM's. :)

Also could you remove the transformer from an SM-57 (the sm-57 tape-op mod)
So we can see how it sounds up against an SM-7.

...I need the mic for vocals more than instrument applications, so the 40 has a bit more "bottom" than the 30...but, if you'll need to use the mic for more varied applications, you'll probably find the 30 more versatile...an associate of mine has both, so I had the opportunity to benefit from his experience...so far I'm very impressed with the Heil mics...

...I do my recording in a home studio, so I'm learning that although I love the sound of various LDC fet and tube based mics, I'm really enjoying the fact that with the dynamic PR-40, I'm not worrying about the neighbor's dog barking, or the AC cycling while I'm in record mode...the Heil is giving me a more quiet, more intimate sound quality that was lacking in my LDC recordings...I find that there is a slightly more "airy" quality to the Heil than I've heard on the SM7 or RE20...it really sounds like a hybrid, combining the qualities of both a dynamic and a condenser...
