Anyone have the E-MU 0404 USB?

To clarify, that interface is USB 2.

It's a good question. I have read that review, but have not seen many consumer reviews. There was a thread about it over on Sound on Sound forum.
 
Very interesting. I would like to see some user reviews as well. Reilley, can you link us to the SOS thread. I searched over there and all I found was a thread with a passing mention of it. But apparently Martin Walker has a review coming out soon.
 
Sorry, I can't find that thread, so maybe it was not on SOS. It is certainly a problem that there aren't many reviews or discussions yet. Who wants to be the guinea pig? According to the review you quote, the sound is only slightly inferior to the 1212M, which is superior to most [all?] cards in its price range. I wonder why they didn't use the same converters as the 1212M and bump up the price a few dollars.
 
Just for people's information, I've been looking for an inexpensive second FW or USB 2.0 interface and looked at these. There's also a cheaper (like $130!) version called the 0202 that just doesn't have midi or s/pdif (I believe), but with the same pres and converters. I decided against this because you can't bypass the pres for the inputs.
I'm looking at the Echo Audiofire2 or Audiofire4 which supposedly has the same AD/DA converters as the higher ticket AF8 and AF12. Anyone have any experience with this series?
 
I'd want to use the pres in my rack. I am looking for something a little more portable than the current interface I'm using-- a Mackie Onyx 1220 Mixer with the firewire card. That way I could go to my friends' studios or practice spaces and record and bring my rack and leave the heavy ass mixer at home.
 
In that case you can bypass the pres by going from your rack pre to the line input.
 
Yeah the line input looks to still go through their preamp circuit. I know what you're saying is usually the case, but the way they describe it in their product descriptions is this:
"E-MU XTC Class-A ultra-low noise Mic/Line/Hi-Z preamps with soft limiter and 48V phantom power (-127dB EIN)"
I'd wouldn't want to run it through the E-Mu preamp at all. I definitely may have this wrong though.

Nothing against the pres at all, but I figure the ones I have in my rack are better. Not that they're top grade, but they're pretty good, and I figure that they will perform far better than the ones integrated into the interface. Running my pres into those would just add more noise and unnecessary analog stages before the converter.
I'd rather pay a bit more for the Audiofire2, which has no pres, but converters with better measurable specs.

It doesn't make sense that they would run a line level signal through a preamp.
 
I agree and understand the technical aspects of what you're saying. I may be completely wrong about what I'm saying (as I've already said), but in any case, will be looking for something else.
