yeah it's pretty hot here... thank god for air con! it is usually about 20 degrees in my room...(being swedish and all)

2 case fans, 1 intake and one exhaust...

i doub't know if there is thermal compund... should be..

i don't know what else could br wrong!

how fast doe syour fan spin db51? also, my fan blows at about 4000 with the case side one. when i take it off, it spinds at 2900 and the chip temp drops about 5 degrees... screwed up case?

According to Motherboard Monitor 5 (which is the software I use to monitor everything) my Volcano 7 is spinnig at 4066rpm...

, it spinds at 2900 and the chip temp drops about 5 degrees

What monitoring sofware are you using?? it sounds like your readings are messed up...The Volcano 7 has an embedded temp sensor which makes the fan speed drop to 2900rpm if it reads 25°C or less (again see here http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/v7.htm)

Have you tried touching the heatsink while the pc's on?? If your readings are accurate (over 50 degrees) it should be quite hot. My guess is that for some reason your readings are wrong and your cpu runs cooler than what's being reported

Edit : I just opened my case to touch the heatsink (its barely warm:D ) and my temp readings dropped to 29°C for the case and 35°C for the cpu. The Volcano fan speed also dropped down to 3552 rpms.
If yours runs at 2900rpm your temps should be even lower than mine.

the volcano measures the ambient temp right? when my case is open, cool 20 degree air flows in, and that is probably what cool sthe cpu a bit and lets the fan slow down. it is a loud fan though...

i am also using motherboard monitor 5

i will touch the heatsink later on and tell you what i find...

I throw my Jacket on the puter when I record. Poor Man's soundproofing.

I used to throw a blanket over mine. It would over-heat and malfunction after about an hour unless I took it off to let it cool down. The symptoms to the overheating problem (I think it was the HDs overheating first) was that I would start getting crackle in newly recorded tracks.

I don't reccomend wireless mouse or keyboard for the closet solution. They might add noise to your audio through leakage into you audio cables. I just used ps2 and usb extension cords.

Even for the closet solution, it's not a bad idea to get quiet components as there will still be some sound leakage from your closet.

thanks guys for all the great ideas. I'm really going to consider building myself a new computer. I'll post if I run into any more problems.

quietpc is awfully expensive. you can get cheaper, just as quiet fans elsewhere...

db51... after leaving my computer on all night with its case open and the aircon on 16 degrees, i woke to find the fan spinning at 2600 rpm and the CPu at 47 degrees...

i felt the heatsink and it wasn't even warm. then i turned the air con off, closed the case and went to school... came back, the fan was at 4300 rpm and the cpu at 56 degrees. i felt the CPU and it was only warm... what is going on! is it possible that MBM5 could be giving me wrong details? even the bios gives me those temps... mobo problem?

The fact that the heatsink is only a little warm with the cpu reading 56°C could be a sign that the heatsink isn't working as it should.
If you know how to do this, I would check if the heatsink is seated properly and maybe put on some new thermal compound after having taken of the old one (follow these instructions http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm)
You don't use a spacer do you??

Anyway, as long as your system's stable, don't worry too much about your temps. An Athlon can easily run at 55°C without being damaged

Yeah I have a quiet computer its a mac!
Convection cooling no fans! :p
he he he he!

C ya

well, i guess i will have to check if it is seated properly

that arctic silver stuff is supposed to be real good right?
you using it?

crazy: how does convection cooling work?

db51, what baord are you using... is it possible that the settings in MBM5 are wrong??

for CPU i am using 'asus 2' out of a possible

'asus 1'
'asus 2'
'asus 2 (CUSL2)'
'asus 3'
'custom'

any idead?

i am suing asus a7m266

Lucid, I'm using the Asus A7N266-C motherboard (nforce 415-D chipset)

I don't think the settings can be wrong in MBM5 : what I did was just put 1 MBM sensor for each asus sensor (asus 1, 2 and 3). Sensor 1 and 2 came up with coherent results, sensor 3 showed -32°C (yep that's a minus sign!) so I just kept the first two in the MBM dashboard

If you really want to lower your temps go to any overclocking forum and tell them your problem : the people in there are experts at heat dissipation techniques!

Check out directron.com go into quiet pc area. They have these little connectors that go in between your fan wires and the mobo connection. They lower the voltage and the fans run a little slower. Most "quiet" power supplys and fans u buy have this feature, thats why they are quiet. They are dirt cheap and may help a lot. Also get a Seagate baracuda 4 hard drive, you cant even here them they are so quiet. If not get the silent drive enclosure for your current hard drive. For the cpu check out Zalman heatsinks they are the best and no noise. I got a quiet pc power supply and u cant even here it but it cost me. Good luck.
After I did all this stuff you cant even tell my PC is on.

I checked out quiet PC. Looks good, but expensive. I'll have to wait a while before I can afford it.

thanks for the info db51

studio 912: what power supply are you using? i can't hear my harrd drive anyway, so that isn't a problem :)

thanks everyone for their input

Sorry I worded that wrong I got a quietpc.com power supply. Very quiet. I actually used one from a local shop near me and it was very quiet also. It was a quick fix until my quietpc power supply showed up but I would of been happy with the one I got from the local guy. Not trying to spam here but it is a good deal. It was www.elitepcservices.com I called him and he had them, my friend got one too. Tell him you want the supply with the noise killer sticker on it. It was around $40 or so, good deal.
