I just ordererd mine today...wondering if u found any quirks problems etc.. I'm using Win XP PRO will the motherboard switch mess things up which'll force me to reinstall anything?

it has an AMD chipset(762)

I'm running dual XP 1700+ (system recognizes them as MPs) on a Tyan Tiger MPX, and it's working flawlessly in Win2K Adv Server. One thing that is very important with the dual AMD systems is that you get compatible components/hardware. I have seen others with problems with insufficient power supplies, cheap memory, etc.

A great site to check out is http://www.2cpu.com for information and discussions about just about every dual setup in existance.

There are ways around having to reinstall your OS, but I would suggest just starting over to prevent any problems.

Running a dual XP1600 on a tyan tiger MP. Like looney said: beware for ram and psu. Go there for good known quality, but do not go over the top. Also some hardware/software is know to give trouble, make sure the stuff you have is compliant or try to test it before you commit yourself.

As I understand it, you seem to just want to transplant your disk and boot. That may give you more problems than expected and take more time in the long run. It might be more efficient to start from scratch. See it as a good time for cleanup.

Do go to 2cpu and run a few searches.

I'm running dual MP2000+ on a MSI K7D Master board with AMD chipset. Runs flawlessly, great performance.

For your info: 512 Mb RAM (soon to be 2 Gb), Matrox G550 dualhead videocard with two 19 inch Iiyama monitors.
Still shopping for the audio-part (using onboard audio for now).

Peter.

Ive built one for a company I do consulting on the side for. They do require a beefy power supply, and registered ram, but they work well.

I have done a motherboard transplant under XP(TYan to Iwill), and it worked flawlessly, but YMMV. I would go ahead and try it, but be prepared to reload if it goes badly. I would never have said that about 2k or 98, as you wouldnt want to switch motherboards without reloading on either of those.

XP seems to be better about detecting and installing new hardware. on its own.

bdgr --- can I talk to your for a sec..

I'm building myself a DAW, I just ordered the 4U rackmount case
(not the power supply just yet)

the idea I have is:

P4 1.7ghz Motherboard - with windows 2000
(which one, MS office , XP Pro, 2000 server)
512 Mb 400mhz RDRAM
20 Gb system 7200 rpm
40 Gb system 7200 rpm (seagate softsonic ATA/100)
black- to match case 16x10x40 speed CDRW
32 Mb ATI Rage pro card for video

I have Cubase & MOTU 2408 MKII, and the 8x8 MOTU interface

What I would like to know: WHAT'S BEST, WHAT TO LOOK FOR :

is the setup I have o.k. and efficient for midi & audio
is there a better set up: AMD, Athlon or whatever
should I have two drives or even a DVD-RW instead

these are the things I'm confused on, I am wholeheartedly ready to dive in to this with 200% focus on making the best system
FOR ME -- I just need a guide of sorts to say ---THIS IS RIGHT---
---THIS IS WRONG ----

I will be taking my time building it, any recommendations I will welcome, cheaper methods, corner cuts, obvious things I may have overlooked. I understand computers, but this will be my first attempt to make a DAW --

thanks for the info...looks like i should start backin up my files now...

how much watts should my power supply have?

and i have 1.2 gig of RAM is that enuff? i heard u need alot of ram for DUAL processor boards

PSU should be at least 400W for a dual AMD, 450W would be even better. My recommendation would be either an Enermax, Antec or PC Power and Cooling PSU.

1.2G of RAM is plenty for most things. I'm only running 512MB and haven't run into any issues at all with memory usage...and I'm running a lot of stuff in the background (FTP, SMTP, IIS, etc) in addition to being able to run ICQ, Email, several web browsers, and Vegas with 30+ plugins on 20+ 24bit tracks...all at once.

Will Sdram work with the MSI dual MP board?

and wheres the CD to overclock the processor i have 2 cds the driver and utility for the USB and the MSI that has the drivers for the chipsets and IDE etc...if its one of those which folder?

Overclocking a dual is not impossible, but not advisable. Why would you, it will be plenty powerfull. If you cannot stop doing it, get everything working first.

As for sdram, depends, just rtfm. Most duals accept no more than 2 banks when using un-registered, but all require ddr afaik.

everything in my set up is up and running fantastic... its just when i was reading the manual to install the motherboard they talked about overclocking software and software that enables u to see the temp of ur cpu's, so im wondering if anyone has tried it
the mother board is a MSI K7d Master AMD-760 mpx chipset based

Hey Teacher,

I'm running the same mobo as you. I did see the overclocking software too, but didn't bother with it. However I have the temp-monitoring software installed. Very reassuring ;)

I would go with a Athlon xp1800 or better, Iwill or Tyan board. 2 drives is not as neccesary as it once was, but its still a good idea. Xp, pro is not needed unless you want to go dual. If you plan on doing any gaming, go with a Geforce card of some sort. I find that a good first person shooter is wonderfull for relieving frustration when things are going right recording. You might consider upping the ram to 1 gig at some point, but 512 should work.

Ok now where the fuck is it? whats the name of the folder??i can't seem to find it...well maybe if i actually try harder...*shrug fuck that someone tell me!!;) :p

Question: Whats a Dangerously high temperature?

i found the files...tried fuzzy logic(overclocking software) my power supply is either to weak (430 watt tru power) or u need a freezer and an eskimo to sit on ur processors to keep'em cool cuz my machine would keep restarting

Some chips can be overclocked, and some cant. Two cpus from the same batch will have differant max speeds, some are right on the line, and you cant bump them up a bit, others you can boost a lot. Personally, I never overclock my system. The tradoff between reliability and longevity are not worth it.

Hey Teach,

AMD CPU's die at 90 degrees celcius. The temp monitor is set default to alarm at 60 degrees, but I set the alarm on my machine at 50.... just want to know early, it might save your CPU's in an emergency ;)

Peter.
