Anyone ever used a Shure PE588?

It's an older Shure mic. My brother just gave it to me, and it needs some new wiring. I'm about to buy some gear, and I wanted to know if I should go ahead and buy a new mic (SM 57), or if this one will be suitable for basic acoustic guitar/vocals on a Fostex MR-8.
