Unpossible!
I am thinking of upgrading to a two CPU motherboard with AMD dual core CPU's. Looking for anyone that has that kind of setup.

The nuendo hardware forum lists extensive testing by guys like Brian Tankersley with dual dualcore setups.

Im building a dual single core system like one of his, with the ability to just add dualcores as soon as the dualcore prices drop.

The Supermicro H8dce and the Tyan S2895 seem to be the popular mobos for this. Im going with the TYAN and a pair of 248's for now

Theres a nice ADK system like this already built on ebay, or you can go straight to their site

I am rolling my own, at a bout a third of the price, but it would be nice to just grab one of these already done

Ya, I want to "roll my own" as well - I have built close to 100 computers, and prefer it to buying an off the shelf comp.

Thanks for the link, I am going to check out the nuendo hardware forums.

:D

Man Im excited! My mobo is in today!

Guys are selling new 248's on ebay for 400 bucks a pair,so i got those, LOTS left

Its getting 2 RME HDSP 9652's

Video card was a radeon x600

Got the corsair reg ecc ram 512 megX4 DDR400

Rack case from PC surplus, 4 space, with a 550 powersupply (may have to up this bit, we will see)

For me I need both an IDE swap drive and a SATA swap drive.
Doing the inclose PM96 for the IDE, as we have lots of those and the cartridges are easy to find. Gotta do SOMETHING about the fan in these though, SO LOUD!!!!

Getting the VANTEC EZ Swap 2 for the SATA. The cartidges are at fry's for cheap

Im putting the DVD/CD on the other IDE channel. Then a WD 1600JS for the system drive, and for now another WD1600JS for the audio

Had to spring for the fancy round IDE cables from ebay for 6 bucks :)

Do you know what the difference is between the AMD64 dual cores and the Opterons?

no, this is going to be my first AMD, and Im utterly clueless about a LOT of this

You need the 940pin Oteron for a dual.

Running right now:
Tyan S2895
2x Opteron 244
2x 2x512MB
Asus X600
RME hammerfall 5296
80GB OS disk
120GB spare ide disk
Areca ARC-1120 sataII raid
4x 160GB raid5
nec dvd-rw
550W psu for the mainboard
350W psu for the raid array

Reasonable pc, but I would like a bit more cpu power sometimes. Noisy perhaps.

Be warned, if you switch to a dual cpu pc, you won't ever want something else.

awesome havoc!!!

when you say you wish you had more cpu sometimes, think about how the rest of us feel LOL!!!!!

You already got the setup, its just a dual dualcore drop away. The 270's are starting to go cheap on ebay, I will hold off till the 280's are 100 bucks :)

if you want to up those 244's to 248's there are a TON of matched pairs for 400 bucks right now

Are you overclocking the 244's any?

Those 244's are not that more powerfull than the X1600's (overclocked to X2000) I had before. One of the X2 setups would stoll past this one without straining. Main difference is in the ram and that this motherboard is a lot better than the previous (that S2460 was a dog).

Problem in getting those 270 cpu's from the states is taxes on import. And here in europe they are not cheap! The cheapest I found them is 919 euro for a single piece.

No, they are not overclocked. Just standard plug in and run.

But I'm serious about the addiction, this is the fourth dual cpu in a row...

I still have a P3 dual 750 at home

that thing was STABLE!!! Used to run the old studio

The P4 Im on now isfast for some things but sketchy

Should have my dual 248 up by tomorrow

Yes, import taxes are high. Just to give you an example, I bought a second-hand book in Australia together with 5 A4-sized plans. Total cost about 70 Australian dollars including postage. Which was reasonable.

It took 6 weeks to arrive and the cost had more than doubled. They added taxes, then administrative charges, then added postage from the customs to me etc...

I upgraded my AMD 3700+ for an AMD 3800+x2. I have an issue with though. now my cubase act up. at first it would show the vst performance meter jumping up and down. then I would go to the advance setting to enable mutiprocessing. and then it would just hang with the processor meter in the task manager at 100%. even though I did have a project open. just the program running. I researched this and found some forums of the x2 and the A8V deluxe motherboards with issues. like the motherboard did not support processor beyond a 3500+ CPU. So I whipped out my old cubase LE and it works fine. but the issue I found was with the A8V deluxe board. I dot know if this happends with other boards. but any way I getting a new board some time this year.

Look for a BIOS upgrade here:

Hope this helps.
