Any use for old speakers.

Everytime I go to Goodwill I see dozens of house speakers for sale for 5 or 10 bucks. If no one buys them they get thrown into the garbage. I am wondering if there is any use for dozens of old speakers.

The ones with bass ports make great mouse nests. Those that don't have too much inupt impedance for mice (sorry. I'll get my coat now...)

While those types of speakers don't do well as near field monitors, they can serve as secondary reference speakers.

Most people try to reference several different speaker/sound systems (the car, a boom box, etc).

Also, I have found the large home speakers can serve as genral room speakers for things like tracking - or just for some general listening..

You can put the larger ones (10 to 12") in a small box, reverse the phase and use it as a second kick mic. It really picks up the air movement.

If you are pissed of at your downstairs neighbor, you can take a big sub and plug it into your wall socket. Not much which is quite as fun as a 60 Hz sine wave at 120V through a speaker. Just remember to wear your ear plugs, and watch the speaker walk across the floor. And don't touch the frame (ZAP!!!!!!!!!!)

And you should probably be mad at all of your neighbors, because they will be pissed as hell at you.

What I was really looking for was, " Yes, you can modify these old speakers into something really great." I guess there isnt anything really usefull I can do with them.

Well, using them for miking kick drum is pretty useful, IMO - they really work! Here's one from the 70s: Break up a small mirror and glue the pieces at vaarious points all over the cone. Feed the speaker (through appropriate amplification) from an aux or buss on your mixer, and train the beam from a small color changing spotlight on the speaker. Kind of a "disco-ball" effect that dances to the music - geat for live gigs, not much use in the studio, except for "vibe".
