im looking to put together a portable midi/audio recording system, and i was wondering if any of you fine fellows would be able to tell me of anything worth looking into. I'm using a little behringer mx800 to do the job (just one track at a time stuff) and ive got a usb/midi 2x2, + ive got a buget of about a £1000, but that's including getting a low-end midi controller. any advice???cheers

I personally have a Dell that seems to work OK for the few little recording ditties I use it for, but all the reviews I've ever seen all seem to lean towards the Sony laptops as the preferred Wintel recording units of choice (supposedly they are more stable and better optimized for recording duties).

I hope this helps.

cool thanks for that i'll have a look. I got told the macs were pretty stable if your running OSX and protools, anyone tried those??

cheers D

im running pro-tools on a a crappy advent laptop that i bought for 500 quid which is running windows XP

but mac is definitely the way forward in my opinion

Ive got a Santa Rosa Macbook running Logic 7.2 on OSX and its very stable. Logic has never froze or even slowed down for me, and I currently only have 1 gb of ram installed. It was 1200 USD so I dont know how much that is to you but it was well worth it in my opinion.

toughbook. I have seen them topple off a 5 ft stage and be fine.

i bought a dell vostro 1500 on ebay for about £700

i think the dude is still selling them by the bucket load as 'returned stock'

2.2ghz core 2 duo
4gb ram
512mb 7600gt graphics
160gb sataii hdd
DL dvd burner
built in wifi
9 cell battery with like,6.5 hours life or something daft

honestly? couldn't beat it with a big stick :)

if i was to go this route, i'd get a mac, and use garage band already bundled onboard...
