whats going on with this m-512?

hey guys and gals, im gonna make one last grasp at help from the knowledge base here, before i pack up this guy and take em to the shop.

i have an m512 that has always been cranky, sometimes usable for months at a time, but now....is not. I am going to post a video link so you can see whats going on (i hope).

basicly every time I power the mixer up, it will behave for about half a minute, and then all of the meters will peg, and the clip lights flash.
then the clip lights on the stereo master channels will stay on with the meters at not quite half mast.
any idea whats going on? if its a simple fix, it might save me a trip to the shop.
thanks alot.

would this be better off in a different forum perhaps? the analogue forum? I dont want to double post.

Hummm.. I don't know. I have something similar going on with my Tascam M-2600mkII 24 Channel/w Merterbridge....When I power on the console, the LEDs on the meterbridge and group/master lights up about 1/4 way up the ladder. After about 1:00 minute, everything returns to normal and does fine as long as the console is left on. I recently sent the PSU to Tascam ( thinking that it may be slow ramping caps and the problem there) proved to be a wate of money ecause they say the PSU was fine!....So I guess it something within the console itself. I just picked up a DDA console so I'm gonna sell the Tascam to someone at a t good price. It's clean and sound fine. Anyone interested..?.:D

lol.

yeah man, thats what i was thinking for a while there. leaky power supply caps, leaking ac to somewhere down the chain...hmmm.
that is pretty much the way this thing has been. if I used it regularly it would be fine, but leave it off for a few weeks and this is what happens.

any takers?....surely someone know's whats happening here.
or guesses for that matter? gotta start somewhere.

It does look like some caps could be leaky there. The main reason bad caps work fine while warmed up is because they "reform" a bit while powered up. Caps that are half dry will basically short at some point.

What you would have to do is clean all connectors to the meter bridge carefully to be sure it is not a faulty ground issue. If it is a bad cap issue, there is something to sat about the rest of the caps in the board.

Good Luck

well since it seems to be a global problem start with the thing that's global... the power supply.... also about 75+% of all repairs involve connections so double check the umbilical and connectors... maybe try some cleaner on the cables... that sorta thing...

Does the audio go south as well or is it just the metering? If it's the latter, I'd be looking at the meter bridge and the branch of the power supply that feeds it. If it's everything, check the power supply and whatever chain it follows throughout the board.

Could it be a prosumer (-10) connected to professional equipment (+4) problem?

thanks for the input guys.

yeah, its not just the meter. I haven't turned it on with monitors hooked up for a while (for this reason), but what i remember happening, is that after the meters peg, its followed by a very loud midrange tone. Of course the monitors would be hooked up to one of the stereo master channels, which are the ones that stay overloaded. The rest of the (non overloaded) channels become useless too. the mixer is fully functional until that happens though.
it's like it throws a relay, or, maybe there's a circuit breaker involved.

I shall see...

Check power supply 1st. Then look for an IC or transistor that has failed and started to oscillate.

dont think that would translate into all the channels.... i'm betting he's losing one of the +/-15-18v rails and all the ics are offsetting to 1/2 the supply thats standing...
