Hey there. Im new to this whole recording and started mixing this year. This is my all time favorite song from them and i decided to cover it and mix my first rock mix. I really need some critics on the mix. Its a draft mix without any vocals as i dont have anyone to sing on it yet. If you are a vocalist and wanna try sing on the track, i dont mind just that send me your clean recorded vocal track.

Im having trouble with the guitar tone. It still sounds muddy to me. Anyone with guitar rig 5 experience with nice pop rock tone, do share with me with patches too.
Drums - Ez Drummer
Bass/Guitars - Guitar Rig 5
DAW - Pro Tools 10

Beware, it might not sound great and its not mastered yet. Still new to it and wanna learn more. Here is it.

I use amp sims all the time and my advice to you after hearing this is spend some time on finding the frequencies that make your guitar tones reek of simulation and then go from there. For me i am pretty happy with both a high and lo pass filter on each track and give it a little boost in the mid to upper mid range and a cut in the 300 to 600 range to kill that muddy blanket those tracks. Thats been my experience with line 6 stuff. It may differ for Guitar Rig stuff. Good Luck.

I would work on the parts where the guitar and bass sound dead center, too empty there. Maybe just double track the guitar with a similar (not the same) guitar sim and then pan them slightly.

You'll want to bring the snare and toms up more, when you mixdown later for mastering and after adding vocals/more instruments the already low levels on the snare and tom will translate to their absense.

I'd bring the hard panning a little more center for the drums in general. The right crash, for example, is a few degrees too far right.

Overall I like the raw/live approach to the mix. It's how I tend to mix as well. No tricks, just good clean rock and roll fun.

How close to the original are you going for?

I just went and had a listen to the original and some thoughts:

1. Double track that guitar and pan it hard, the original sounds like it did.
2. Add some dirt to the bass track, the studio version sounds like they used an overdrive on it.

Can't add too much to what's been said already. Double track the guitars all the way through.

As far as the muddy tone - I think your guitar tone is missing some high-midrange bite. It's like there's not much from 2Khz on up. I'd see what you can do about that. That might take care of the muddiness all by itself.

Not sure about the tempo... I don't know the song well, but I remember the melody in the chorus. I was "singing in my head" along with the chorus and it seemed rushed. The tempo might be a bit fast. I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'd check it out to be sure.

Thanks for the reply guys. For what i did similar to you guys. I put on high pass and low pass filters on ard 130hz and 12khz. Then I do a 3db but on 400hz to remove themudness. Currently on 2 guitar tracks pan 85 left and right. That's what I did and found somehow still muddy.

Some improvements made with previous feedbacks

Hey guys, I already made some changes to the mix, to me its a bit better but not sure to you guys.

What i did basically add some distortion to the bass itself and make some cut on 400hz on the guitars to remove some muddyness and boost ard 8khz to get some high end clarity. Panned the guitars hard right/left but still with 2 guitars tracks and a lead track. Tell me what you guys think and is it an improvement from previous mix and what i need to improve more on. Hope to hear some feedbacks.

Cheers and have a nice day.
