Hi Folks,
I've applied your suggestions: lifted & moved vocals; dealt with some nervous 'cello & chopped off the edit clunks.
Let me know how it comes out.

Just for interest's sake here is a photo of my set up...the amps are out of picture to the left ( you can see part of the superbass MkII under it's cover on the floor & it's cab behind). A Yammie 4 track & an Inca 8 I/O on the desk, a P3 under the desk & a 60's stereo reel 2 reel (the brown box sitting on the noise red unit) on the right.

Cool tune! Very interesting, almost avant-garde.

There is a lot of reverb, I assume the space is echo-y? The girl has an interesting voice. My main suggestion would be to find a "drier" location to record, the echo makes it sound more like a live recording in a hall than a studio recording. Good tune.
 
I think it's shaping up pretty good....bass is good and punchy. I can hear the voice better. Sometimes the verb fits, and sometimes it seems too much....I'm not sure myself about it. Most of teh time I like it, and don't know if the tune would sound good drier.... :confused:

Yeah, I'd say there's too much of a 'roomy' sound in the vox. Sounds live, like in a club or something.

Nice set up in the pic. It needs a little cleaning up, though!!!!

Like Dogman said....vocals are much clearer now at the higher level.

I think the vocals could use less reverb (or room?) to match that of the instruments. Try to get them a bit closer together.

The only question is how much of that reverb/room sound is on the original track - maybe it can't be removed. In that case they could be retracked drier when the opportunity arises.

Everything else sounding good in the mix though....

Wow Ray, you write some cool, weird stuff. Always interesting and un-predictable. I can't really add to what was said. Everything is great, but maybe a little too "live" sounding. Love the percussion and overall vibe.

Relistening with my headphones on tonight...

The vocals definitely sit right in the mix with respect to volume and positioning.

It sounds like she is singing at quite a distance away from the mic - but they are nice and clear. Are we getting the room from the type of mic - like figure 8 or something or is it just attributable to distance?

My very limited recording experience is with cardioid so there's only a little room involved (and I sing like it's a dynamic :eek: ).

In any case it sounds like a good mic was used. And she has a great voice.

Cool studio shots - a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind :D :) :D :)
 
Yeah everything sounds great on my system. The bass and percussion are awesome. Vocals sit right in volume to my ears, you nailed a real live band feel here. Not sure if that's what you're going for, but sounds real cool nonetheless. Great track, I'm downloading this one :cool:

Thanks David. I can't dry this mix any more than I've done sorry. The room was pretty live - half a wall of glass & I forgot to pull across the double set of curtains I'd set up. Thanks for the positive comments. I've attempted to dry out as much as poss on the next thread/post of the piece.

Thanks man. I've dried it a tiny bit more but I think I'm like you - by & large it seems to suit.

I've learnt a lesson re live room sound - last time i had this trouble it was a tiled shower recess. You should see the other half of the room - that's where the stuff I don't want in my way at the time goes. Thanks for the comments.

The sound is on tape. Next time Miriam is in town I'll tie her to the mic & try to get a better take. I also had her some distance from the mic as she is inclined to bump it as well as the stand & to pop a lot. The mic was either a La Grange DM 110 Dynamic or a Sony Electret Condenser 19B - I can't recall & I didn't keep the running/recording sheet for this song. The former is a fluke of a mic - cost about AUS$45 about 12 years ago and I've had a couple of semi pro's offer to take it off my hands for live work. the latter is just a weird little mic that is terrific - I actually have 3 of them I like em so much. Tyanks for the detailed and spot on responses.

Ta muchly. I happy with the vibes it compensates for my cello playing & for Miriam's occasional skating note.
Thanks chaps - I'll post a slight variation - as dry as I could make it given the circumstances - in few minutes on a new thread.
Please let me know whether the version above or the newer one hit the spot better.
