Antares mic modeler

hey, i was wonderin how good and accurate this was...

anyone have n e clue?
 
well say if i use a rode nt1a to record vocals, but then i set the modeler to neumann. its gotta make it at least a little better, right? even if its not right on...it cant make it worse...correct? or no...?
 
It'll make it different... better is in the ear of the beholder. I thought it was a complete and total crock of shit when I heard it... but YMMV.

The Antares mic modeler is NOT accurate... but, it can be pretty fun and neat if you think of it more as an effect box.

I often try it to hear what it result, and sometimes, I can use it on, example, the chorus or (...) and it can end up with a cool "fx".

I dont expect any mic to sound like any other mic, but i use it like a kind of EQ. Some times it works, some times it doesnt.

It doesnt depends only of the mic, also of what your recording.

I tried a few times to use it on something else than a vocal track, I the only thing I used it is on a snare. Was cool. I still try it sometimes, when I'm not satisfied of "X" track.

Yep, I'm glad to have it.
 
I've read up a lot on it but don't have any experience using it.

I would rate it as one of those pieces of equipment that are sort of in the second level of needs.

In other words, it's probably more important to have good basic equipment (quality mic(s), preamp, effects unit, A/D convertor, compressor, etc..) THEN there may be some use to have it to get different types of sounds. From all it accounts, it doesn't take a cheap mic and make it sound like something more expensive, but can be fun to play with and may provide a sound that could be useful for a particular application.

actually, believe it or not, before everyone starts bashing the program as is such a popular thing around here, the answer is "correct"... in some cases.
this is in fact exactly what i use it for. on MY voice, anyway, it makes my rode nt1 sound significantly better - more so than i could do with EQ. it certainly doesn't improve every mic on every source. but it does work quite well with the NT1 - set to a u87, it darkens the harshness quite a bit and adds some more low-end fullness. it also manages to model transient response time of different mics (so it is NOT just an EQ), though how accurate that part of it is, i couldn't say.

that said, you certainly would be better off spending the money on a better mic to begin with.
 
i've fooled around with it before.. i look at it as a Eq.. and in that standpoint it works well... if you wanna add some color or Model your mic to be in omni.. it does a decent job..
as for changing your NT1 to a M149..NO but it can sonically enhance your tracks...
 
i'm using it in the same way as bleyrad.

i think it sounds better...to me it doesnt have to sound exactly like the mic, but if it makes it sound better, i'm happy with it. jus so long as it doesnt make it a lot worse...

the few times i used it, vocals came out worse 1 or 2 times.. it seemed as if the "TUBE drive" gave the track noise..
i just ended up getting a better preamp and a quiet quality tube mic(ADK a51TC) and i had no reason for mic modeler...
i often would model the Rode NTV for vocals..
 
Let me put it this way... if you think an Antares mic modeler is going to make a Shure SM57 sound like a Neumann U87, your going to be very diisappointed with the Antares mic modeler.
 
yo man, like i said, im not trying to make it sound like anything...im jus trying to make it sound BETTER...not exactly like it, jus better than how it is now
 
IMO - you'd be better off finding out why it doesn't sound better now, than buying gear to make it sound better.

If the problem is recording techinque rather than gear, then the most expesnive gear in the world will not help you "sound better"!
