YO Phree as a bird:

Glad to hear you took a trip to "demo" units.

One thing you might hear from some members here is that you can have more tracks to record with a PC based unit.

Well, how many tracks do you need? Personally, 16 tracks are more than I'll ever need.

I have the Yam 2816 and it is a pretty amazing piece of gear to me. I also have the Yam MD8 hooked up in my studio but its days are numbered. As soon as I really get familiar with my 2816, no mo MD8.

The 2816, as I've said in other posts, is really a PC miniaturized. It has a screen, the 4416 can take a mouse, also the 2816 I believe, it has "windows" of information or library windows and you have to take a bit longer to make tweaks but not that much longer.

The headroom in the 2816 is WAY beyond the MD8. But, I must admit I've done some nice stuff with the MD8, as well as another unit I have in the catacombs, my old Tascam 488.

So, as you said in your post, it's mostly personal or professional. If you need to do 24 plus track work I guess you would go for a PC based system; if space and 16 tracks are enough, a stand alone unit would work.

It sure is nice not having to wait for tape to rewind with the digital boxes.

Stay Phree and have pfun!

Hey there Hornet!

Thanks a bunch for posting this feedback. I'm sorry didn't see it until 6 days later. :)

Yes, 16 tracks is plenty. Just in the short time I spent checking out both the 28 and 44 units, I can definitely side with you that these things are small scale PCs. I'm impressed with alot of Yamaha products the more I research them.

It's funny you mentioned having the MD8, as I initially thought about recording on the MD platform. I even emailed Yamaha Sales about the MD8 a few months ago to ask if any successor was forthcoming? The person who replied said no, and also said the MD world is iffy. So, after hearing that and hanging out on the MD forums/sites on the web for awhile to get feedback, I decided not to go that route. Also, after seeing that there were only a handful of tabletop MD recorders on the market, that made me more hesitant to go that route and buy a tabletop MD recorder.

However, I haven't let go of the idea of buying a portable (pocket) MD recorder for catching sounds that I can't get with any PC or other large piece of equipment. This would be to record nature sounds, other sounds in public, etc.

Thanks again, and having phun is what it's all about!

Yo Phree:

Interesting information about the "lifespan" of MD platforms. The MD8 is nice, convenient, able to record just about out of the box; however, the sound just doesn't compare to a "better" digital unit.

Sorry about getting this post in the wrong forum; somehow or another I pushed the wrong button and it wound up here; I figured you'd catch it sooner or later.

Good luck on whatever you choose to use -- it will be PHUN.
