get a good compressor

DON't know how to use a compressor

I am not sure how to use a compressor...what is the main point of one...i think when i get my effects cards in my roland vs 1880 they will have some built in ....are these things easy to use?

Again, do a search on here for compressors and you will find all kinds of tasty info.

As mentioned a compressor will help flatten your tracks. But you may also need to look at doing some dynamic riding on the vocal tracks. This will allow you to adjust your inflections.

Yeah. Mic technique is vital. It gets better with practice. The good news is this.....It's a great excuse to practice! Dave

Dynamic riding?

Is dynamic riding where you just adjust the volume while listening to the recording?
Also are compressors easy to use?
Do you know where in the 1880 to find one...do i need the effects card for that

Dynamic riding makes the track 'breathe'.. and that's important. Too much compression can spoil a good vocal track.
Compressors are easy enough to use if you understand what all the parameters mean. Just do a search, there is a lot of info about that..

Further more...when you say (and many othersin the forum) Dynamic riding, what exsactly you mean by this...is it manually adjusting sound ie volume, panning etc at different points of the track? im i even close???

Yea, that's kinda close. Adjusting, changing... volume, effects... as needed at different points.

I think you just need practice. Make sure you're listening to what you're hearing and then make changes accordingly.

Another option is to get some mic control. When you sing (or scream as the case may be) louder step back from the mic a little bit. If you whisper or sing any soft spots, move in closer.

This will help the source, so that you don't have to compress as much. The better the source, the easier it is to mix.

Can you define "it sounds like shit"? (rabbit pellets or a big steaming elephant pile?)

Is it because it's distorted, is it because it jumps out of the mix, or is it because your voice itself stops sounding good when you sing loud? These all have different solutions.
