ive been looking into different o/h budget mics and narrowed my choices down to :

Studio Projects C4's
MXL 603's
Rode NT5's
AKG C 430's

i have found the MXL's for a little cheaper than all of the others but all pretty much the same price. what is your choice?

p.s. i really would like to get some sm81's but are out of my price range. would you suggest to forget about these others and save my money to get the 81's?

It all depends. If you accumulate money pretty quickly then yes it would be worth saving. If not then it is really up to what you are looking for out of your mics. For example, the MXLs are a pretty bright mic whereas the C4s are surprisingly flat. If you are gonna tend to record a kit that sounds "dull" then the MXLs would be a good choice to make the kit sound livelier. Then again if you want to get the most accurate sound I think, in the price range, the C4s are the best. Sorry for not touching on the other mics, I don't have any experience with them.

gathering what other people have said, the akg c430s work as overhead mics, but nothing else, so if you want versatility, leave these ones out of the race

Might want to consider the KEL HM-1s...just read the thread on it. All postive. We are thinking of picking up a pair.

Second that. They work great for overheads, but I wish I could use them on some other sources.

The C4's or the NT5's.......

If saving is an option, then yes wait for the better SM's....
