Another snare thing; with an RNC on over heads.

I was wondering if anyone else out there does this.
My drum set up is just two QTC1's (near the drummer's sholders more or less), some kick mics and snare mics. (Mostly this is rock/r&b)
A lot of times, I'm finding I'll use the RNC compressor (I guess any fast comp would be the same) on the overheads set real fast (like the attack and release all or almost all the way down) and on this mic position, it catches the kit in a way that it really can control the the snare volume. It seems to bring the whole kit up, yet it hardly touches (or registers on) the rest of the kit. Maybe I'm getting some peak limiting on the rest of the kit that I'm not seeing on the meters, but the kit is sounding real smooth too.(?) On some songs, it's like you can virtually turn the snare down to a huge degree without pumping the whole kit.
Between that and the snare mics, it's like having a whole other way too treat the balances, and envelopes and tones... way cool, makes me :) I guess I figured I'd never be using anything that fast on the whole kit.

...oops. Or maybe everybody does this and I'm just slow to catch on...
