Hi all,

I have been using Rebirth(software synth), SFAcid, and FruityLoops to make loop based techno/D&B tracks. At this point my system is totally software based (not counting comp hardware of course): PII 400 mghz processor, 96 megs ram, 10 gig drive, TB montego sound card, HP CDRW, Signal Flex sf 140 monitor headphones. I am planning to upgrade some components on the system in the near future (possibly processor, motherboard so I can have more slots, tower case, memory)
While I have enjoyed working with other people's loops I wanted to have more flexibility than what I can produce on Rebirth. I have a guitar and amp and would like to be able to record guitar tracks (wah stuff, basic melodies) and I would like to get a keyboard, sampler, and sequencer in order to make melodies, heavy d&b drum loops, etc. My problem is that I am pretty new to the MIDI, Keyboard, digital recording world.

I would appreciate any help especially with respect to sound cards. And the order in which I should buy the components. We'll set a budget of 1,500 to 2,000 $ not including motherboard, processor and hard drive, which I am planning to upgrade for other reasons anyway. I am aiming for a system that can grow as my budget grows, i.e. less stuff and better quality to start.

Thanks for your time and patience.

I also just wanted to say that I read through the very helpful thread started by Squash Boy, but I figured that we had different needs cuz squash was looking more for accoustic guitar based stuff. I would like to be able to plug my guitar and keyboard straight into the computer. I know it is not the same as a mic and amp, but I am looking for electronica sounds any way.

Thanks,

Cyrus

you might be better off reading the forums at http://www.dancetech.com and doing a search from there, both this bbs and dancetech seem to serve different purposes for musicains like us (read: recording here and electronic toys and theory there :-)
anyway to answer a little of your question, I cannot tell u waht would be the best in your situation, only give u advice on what i have experience with:

soundcards - delta 66 is a good card for the money and has 6 ins and outs, real quiet (my bro has one), the gina (has 4 ins and outs?) and sounds real good too (cheaper i think) both come with a handy breakout box, and no midi onboard

midi - if u plan on hooking up more than one piece of kit it might be a good idea to get a dedicated midi card or a midisport usb box (yucky green color :-)

mixer - I dont have one but i will eventually need a simple one for mic preamps and easy volume controll

synth - anything that makes cool noise and dont limit your creativity

sampler - anything with lots of memory and lots of different effects should do just nicely

and whats wrong with fruityloops? its just great for everything I think especially getting your ideas down quick
am i leaving anything out?

Thank you for the kind response Syn and for tuning me in to the dancetech bbs.
