I just realized that a lot of people here may not be aware of the rec.audio.pro newsgroup or the compilation sets we've put out over the last 3 years. While the sets are limited to a very small production run (500 sets each year), the information on how they were recorded is still very valuable, and readily available to everybody.
The website (for all the liner notes of all 3 sets) is: http://www.hoohahrecords.com/rap . From there, you can browse 100s of pages of notes on the recording chains used by different members of rec.audio.pro.
Even though the first two sets are completely sold out, the techniques used to make the recordings are all there in the liner notes, including one track by George Massenburg, and one track by Bob Ohlsson (Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, etc.), to name just a few of the r.a.p. contributors. The range of music is vast, from classical symphony orchestras, to just one person and a guitar.
This last set of four 74-minute long CDs is still available for a while longer, and at $15 for the whole set (including airmail shipping to anywhere in the world), it's probably one of the best deals on the planet - kind of a mini recording course.
But even if you don't get the set, the liner notes are worth their weight in gold for all the tips and tricks they include, and they're free!!!
I didn't mean for this to sound like an ad, but the liner notes are well worth visiting, and it will take several days just to read all the liner notes.
