Hello everyone,
After reading over all of Rolands available documentation, I have yet another question about the VS-1880. How would it be possible to mic up an eight piece drum kit with a VS-1880? Obviously two XLR inputs wouldnt cut it and I have been told to get a separate mixer. What would be a good set-up? If anyone would like to share their set-up with me it would be appreciated. Right now my ideas are to have something like a small Mackie with a decent number of inputs running into the 1880, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it. I'm confused!! Someone please help!!!

Thanks!

Ryan

p.s.: In the documentation they make it seem as though its possible to mic up a kit with no outboard mixer when they discuss bouncing tracks down... For example, they show how one might bounce down the following tracks to only two tracks: R overhead, L overhead, High tom, Mid tom, Low tom, snare, Bass drum

hey!
I don't know if this will help or not, but here's what i've been doing. I have been recording my band live, so what i do with the drums is to run my snare directly into the 1880,(to allow for better control during mixdown)and run everything else through a 12 channel mixer before going to the 1880. Of course when doing that, you have to have a soundcheck/mix first, but for our purposes, so far it's worked well. I've tried running all the drums separately before, each drum to a different channel on the 1880, and that works pretty well, but it almost seems easier to go ahead and run it through a separate mixer first. It makes mixdown much simpler, at least for me anyways. Hope this helps!

Mike

Thanks!

Thanks for the response, it helps me a good bit... ive got yet another question though.. when you say, routing each mic to an individual channel, what exactly do you mean? are you talking about by means of the 1/4" jacks running out of your 12 channel mixer? thanks again yoder!

Glad that i could be of help...
Yes, that's what i meant about running the drums through separate channels...i had to go through the mixer first. Let me know which method you use and how it turns out. Happy recording!

hi
I like what drummerRyan if you are mixing the hole band
you might not have any plug ins left, do the sound check
out of the mixer head phone jack, then check what it sounds
like in the 1880. You should look into a Alesis 24 or 32
it has a better pre amp and I think that it is cleaner and you dont have to unplug your head set in and out of the two the alesis has a patch that will let you hear what it sounds like in the 1880, push a button and your back at the mixer, but dont get the Alesis 16 that option isnt there, Im looking at the 24 or 32
the 32 just has more room. Hope this can help you Ryan

Once again, thank you for the help...

Thanks for the info metalwav, thats what ive been looking into lately...

You can plug 8 mic's in the VS1880 however. All 8 inputs have a mic pre. The only difference with the 2 XLR inputs is that these 2 can provide phantom power, and, offcourse that they are XLR.

But you can plug mic's directly in the 1/4" inputs too. You just need the right cables for that. (XLR to 1/4" stereo type) Somewhere in the manual you can find what cable you need for it exactly...

But you don't really need a mixer if you're not planning to record more than 8 tracks at once. But it can allways come in handy ofcourse.

My friend has the 1880 and he does it just as Roel said, use xlr to 1/4" cables and take in all 8 channels.

Thanks guys!

Once again, thank you thank you thank you for the help! Im glad people are actually responding to my posts now...
