ok this might be a little hard to grasp but here goes:

I have a mackie 1402 mixer with six preamps, and i use seven mics for drums, six going into the mackie, and the seventh (bass drum mic, beta 52) i go straigh into my yamaha 2816. I need a preamp, a) for the bass drum mic because the pres on the yamaha are weak, b) for vocals because i need more color on my vox, and c) to use on my accoustic guitar with two mics. I was looking at two pres, the focusrite voicemaster, which is one channel, and the dmp3 which is two. So i have one question, is it worth having two channels that might not be as good as the voicemasters one for acoustic guitar (two mics). or would it be better for vocals and bass drum to have something like the voicemaster? Any input is appreciated.

If you think you need the eq, compression, and the other goodies the focusrite brings to the table, then go with the voicemaster thingie. If all you need is some clean gain for your mics, then the dmp3 is a better value.

ok but how much better of a sound can i get with the focusrite, plus i already have decent eq and compression on my workstation

Then that probably settles it ; since eq and compression aren't really strong needs right now, why pay for extra features you don't need? The voicemaster has a pretty impressive pre for the price, but I doubt it would be much of a step up (if any) from, say, the dmp3.

You mentioned you're looking for color; if that's important to you, you should have a look at the Peavey VMP2 -- there's a couple on ebay if I'm not mistaken. The M-Audio Tampa might be worth a look, along with the Joemeek. These are what come to mind as "color" boxes.

For clean, no-nonsense gain, go with the dmp3.

Ya i do want as much color i can get for about 250 dollars. bit two channels would be really good because im micing my accoustic with two mics and i would rather have two upgraded preamps than one mic with the new preamp and the other mic with the mackie preamps.

come on people im gonna buy this stuff soon so some comments would help a lot.

Well its a subjective issue, so you have to decide what might work best for you both this weekend and in the long run. Personally, I would get the Focusrite.
