Another Mic Tube Question...

Thanks to those with useful input...

Marik...Thanks for a definitive answer to my original posting...your remarks are always constructive and intelligent...I will consider an upgrade using only the same E88CC/6922 tube the mic was designed to employ...

Chessparov...I appreciate your input as well...your recommendations are well received...since we will be using this mic as a primary vocal mic, the extra expense of a multi-pattern version (K2) would be prohibitive at this time...

Middleman...I have to say I agree with you as to the NTK's usefullness when recording male vocals (baritone)...we just completed some vocal overdubbing tonight on a great Reggae/R&B style tune with a very talented male vocalist who sings in a range somewhere between Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass, and he was very pleased with the way the NTK handled his bassy voice...I thought the NTK reproduced his vocal sound very accurately...well worth the $350. I paid for it...I recommend it for similar applications...

I would not expect much difference you could hear. NTK is a cathode follower type of circuit with, as I have already mentioned, SS load. In this arrangement CF due to its essentially 100% negative feedback principle of working, "hides" differences between different brands much more than anode follower. But if you like to experiment and have some spare $$$, by all means try it.

Hmmm...

My only other experience was upgrading the 12AT7 in my MXL V69M to one of the vintage Seimans/Halske NOS E81CC/12at7 tubes I got on ebay cheap...it seemed to smooth out the top end of the mic a bit...but these mics employ a different type of circuit?...much more complicated than I had thought from some of the postings I've read (see below)...

...maybe these guys who spend big bucks on vintage tubes "think they hear a difference" due to the dollar investment/justification...

Hey Marik...Thanks again!
