The Way It Moves
Hey everyone.

This isn't the typical "where can I find free plugins" type of question, but rather, I am interested in finding specific plugins. Right now I would like to find a good EQ that allows me to do low/high pass (usually parametrics have this ability right?). Other plugins I'm interested in include a frequency analyzer, compressor, reverb, delay, and something along the lines of Autotune and Melodyne. I am interested in what you guys have achieved the best sonic results with.

I've demoed the Waves stuff, but can't really justify spending that kind of money on those plugs. Plus a even a few Guitar Center employees have told me to go find free plugs instead of dropping that kind of cash. Also can't afford to buy Autotune or Melodyne ($500 ... OUCH).

Thanks guys...!

Well free plugs is what they are, FREE. Most, not all, are garbage. they tend to leak a lot, cause hosts to crash and are huge CPU and memory hogs. Don't pay attention to the guys at guitar center, most of them have no idea of what they're talking about. One of them actually once suggested i buy Reason. Told me it's the perfect workstation. does everything I would ever want. If he did his homework he would have realized that it doesn't do audio recordings....lol.

With that said, there are a FEW decent plugs that are available for free. They are stable and well made.

IMO nothing beats Waves or Voxengo. They are reliable and used in literally every major music house. There is a good reason for that!! Lately I've been using native plugs a lot. Most are high quality and made specifically for the host they were designed for.

Good Luck
Gabriel

Yeah... I should know not to listen to GC employees...

The few of the Waves plugs I liked were the EQ ones. I used the Waves SSL 4000 EQ and it was AWESOME... but I can't afford that package ($600 W T F).

Anyways... Thanks for posting the links, I'll check it out. Otherwise I'm going to keep my eyes out for used plugs on eBay/Craigslist. Should I be careful buying used plugs?

Thanks.

Here's a thread in another forum compiling a bunch of free plug-ins. I know it's not what you're looking for but maybe it can help you get there. I have had some luck on kvraudio.com getting my plug ins. They also have a ranking system to get the ones other people agreed worked best.

I like the kjaerhus audio classic series for free plugs. I think theyre the best thing I've really found. Most of the stock plug-in's cover a lot of ground for me though.

Good luck anyways. Hope I didn't hurt the thread!

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find any auto tune stuff for free or even cheap.

Though, I do think Reaper, makes a plugin for auto-tune type function. Don't know if that is vst though.

Yeah... Even Audition has a pitch correction feature. But I can't say that it works very well, or even has a very good interface. I've had a pretty low success rate with it. I might just bite the bullet and buy a used copy of Melodyne (I like it a little more than Autotune).

There is also waves tune to consider.

Waves is more like melodyne to me at least in appearance.

I think with any of these options you will find yourself in good hands anyway.

Look at the stillwell plugs. They aren't free, but not expensive at all and are just as good as any waves plugs. The rocket comp and the 1973 eq are my 2 fav

Not free, as such, but they provide unrestricted demos - only limitation is a nag screen on startup. That said, I'm prety sure that once you've used them, you'll want to buy them.

Also, Graham Yeadon has some great freeware VSTs here - including GSnap, which is kind of a bit like Autotune. Genuine freeware and genuinely good. http://www.gvst.co.uk/index.htm

Also, the Bootsy series of plugs found at http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/ are pretty fine. Beautiful GUIs and the EpicVerb is a sweet reverb plug. Again, Freeware.

Edit/...God, but I should read earlier posts before I open my gob...

This is sooooo true . . . .

Don't pay attention to the guys at guitar center, most of them have no idea of what they're talking about.

Sooooo True

I can't count the number of times the staff at our local GC had no clue.
All they care about is their sales commission.
