What would you recommend? The AT or SM81? For acoustic...

I am a pretty huge fan of the AT 4050. It is the most under rated LDC on the market!

George Massenburg claims that the 4033 is his "go to" mic for acoustic guitars. It is the first mic he tries and stays with it most of the time.

And what is awesome is that not only do you have a killer sounding acoustic mic, but now you have a killer all-purpose LDC! The AT 4050 is all over most every studio recordings I have ever done. Drum over heads, snare, electric guitar, trumpets, trombones, percussion, acoustic guitar, vocals.

In my mind, I would rather spend the $300-400 (used) for one than buy 3 or 4 $100 cheapy LDC's!!!

If I had to live with two affordable mics, one a LDC, and one a condensor, it would be a 4050 and the Sennheiser 421.

George Massenburg was also quoted in giant text in a Chameleon Labs ad saying that he loves his Chameleon Labs TS-1 and uses that it "seems like every session [he does, he finds] an instrument that they sound great on." That sounds like a great mic. Steve Albini apparently loved some cheap ass AT mic (pro 37 I believe) and also Josephson condensers.
I dunno about these "celebrity" endorsements though...

Out of the four mics, the first mic (msh 1a) sounds a little better, but all of them are marginal at best. The Peluso CEM6 would be a much better choice and really doesn't cost that much when considering its amazing detail and sonic quality.

I dunno about these "celebrity" endorsements though...

Well, this wasn't really an "endorsement". He used to moderate a forum over at Expert Forums, and a thread was started about micing acoustic guitars. Everybody started sharing what their "go to" acoustic mic was, and George chimed in.

I was actually surprised at how many of the big time engineers who frequented that forum liked the AT 4033 and 4050 for acoustic guitar!

the mxls sound the same, the nady sucks, sounds like it was recorded differently. First one is the best, I think I liked the 67g better than the first mxl

The nOOb says

Ok I am a Noob here but not to Playing and recording music
for good affordable Budget condenser mics i like just about anything MXL makes pretty well
CAD makes some nice Mics too.

Impressed by how bad the Nady one sounds!

I quite liked the MSH one. The MXL990 sounded how I expected as I have one myself .... pretty poor. I'm glad I didn't pay anything for mine, I keep making scratch recordings with it and then when I later want to keep them in I can't because they sound so bad. :)

I like the MSH mics alot...it might be me but the MS2s seem to be a little bit noisy. Maybe that's par for the course, I don't know much about mics.

Matt what guitar is that?

actually, i just found out the exact model yesterday while doing some research. its a Sigma dr-9. it was a model made in small quantities, along with the dr-11, put out sometime in the year span of '77-'84.

I like the MSH... it depends on your guitar but you normally get a less boomy sound at 10 to 12" away. Nice playing though...
