To follow in the Chessrock vein- If your amp sounds OK to you, and you stick a perfectly good mic in front of it, and you don't get the sound you expected to hear, take a good look at the room. It may be the sound you want to hear is there, but it's getting lost in a sea of room reflections. And in spite of the scoffing above, the preamp you use is critical. I went out and bought an Avalon to run that guitar through, as suggested above, and I can tell you it works pretty good. no complaints here.-Richie

You haven't mentioned the mic pre you use have you? A really good pre can make a night and day difference.

Sen.421's work well also..So many choices..Back the mic off the amp a little..When you listen to the amp do you put your ears right up on the speaker..proboly not,right!So move the mic back a little , also you might be havein' some prox effect goin' on..that might acount for you low end mush ..even more so when your cranking the snot outa the amp..try turning it down just a touch..Just a idea..anyways good luckDon

Hey, I have nothing against the sound of ribbon mics on a guitar amp.
But if someone tells me that something sounds kinda' muddy and they want more high end, I don't normally think: "ribbon mic."
Call me crazy.
You guys are like the doctor who just writes a prescription while paying no attention to the patient's symptoms.

Doctor: "You should try a ribbon mic. Those really rock on guitar amps!"

The main body of my post suggests to moveing the mic and ajusting the dbs. possibly..Should have mentioned gettin it off the floor too,but I didn't
I could have suggested standing on his tiptoes for more highs

Part of the thread is about... sometimes an MD421 does a better job than a SM57 (or visa versa) no matter how much your fuck around with placement... and it's also about trying placement first... but, sometimes you just need different mic.

The most important thing is microphone placement, quality of the pre-amp, and the compressor if used (both in terms of how well you use the compressor, and how good the machine is) above all else. Even the best microphone won't sound right if you are not using your compressor correctly, or if your mic pre-amps suck.
That said I've tried a number of mikes but in a limited environment. Most were in the mic try-out room in a music store. But when mikes that your have known and loved for years are there, it's easy to talk into your mike and then go compare it to one of the mikes next to it.
I own (among other "lesser mikes" that don't count) some SM 57s and an AT 4033. The SM 57s work great on amplifiers, and do very well on vocals and even acoustic guitars.
The AT 4033 is just a gorgeous microphone for vocals, or almost any acoustic instruments. Just make sure you have a wind-guard! It was a little harsh on the dulcimer, but I was able to fix it with some compression and a little EQ cut. I was astonished at how well it reproduced the stand-up base. It does great for both high end, and low end frequencies.

I don't mean to bust you guys' asses, but your suggestions, when taken as a whole, are pretty damn useless. Have you all learned nothing since you first started posting on this board?
I vote for a new mixing board and monster cables as a bare minimum (to go along with that Avalon, of coarse). Mic placement is pretty well down there on the list. AFTER the mastercard is maxed out, only then would you try something as foolish as "engineering" and "mic placement"
So, yes. I have learned alot here at harmonycentral 2.
