analogue delay/echo - recomendations please

I'm after an analogue delay/echo effect for lead guitar riffage and what-not. Ideally I'd like a WEM Copycat or Melos tape-cartridge thingwy. But they don't come up too often on eBay, and when they do are either wrecks or too pricey. So tape based echo seems out the question. I hear the Memory Man is a good alternative - but that too is a bit dear for me. What about the Danelectro stuff? That seems v. cheap. Any opinions? Does it sound cheap too?

Any suggestions or experience with analogue delay/echo out there? Thanks in advance.
 
I bought a Boss Analog delay back in '82. I still have it and it still sounds great. If you can pick up one of these you will be very happy.
It's a shame, I owned two copycats in the seventies and literally gave them away. I would love to have one of them now.
 
My only experince with analog delays is limited to the Yamaha E1005. I still have it in the rack. Not a bad little unit if you can find them.
 
I use the Ibanez UE405 multieffect with the built in analog delay. This one sounds amazing !!! If you come across one of the old Ibanez analog delays (AD-80, TS-9 etc) you should definately try them out !

If you'd like a tape echo (Tape is pretty easy to find and they can usually be fixed pretty easily), try an Echoplex, or a Roland Space Echo.
For non-tape echo, the E-H Memory Man is a cool pedal.

Wow tony I'd give my left nad for a Space Echo. But tell me about the Memory Man if you can. I've heard lots of good stuff. How does it compare with tape systems please? Thanks in advance.
 
I reccomend the Zoom 508 Delay, I just got one on Ebay for $26 + shipping.

It is programable, very clean, easy to use. Similar to the Line6 modeler in functionality.

Yes it's Zoom, but it sounds great so WHUT-EVAH!
 
it makes me curious.... the digital zoom sounds like an analog delay ?..... it's hard for me to believe actually.
 
Well, it has a Hi-Damp parameter that is adjustable, to try and simulate the tape effect.

But I'm more of a digital guy when it comes to delay, so what sounds good to me might not sound so great to you.:(
 
The Binson looks ace. Italian as well! I'd never heard of 'em before. Brilliant.

So these EH Memory Mans (mans??) are re-issues then? the $240 ones, I mean? That's kind of dear really. When the effects start costing as much as the multi-tracker I have to wonder if I shouldn't get another mic pre or mic. Heh. But yeah - the MM DOES seem like the one to shoot for, it's true.

Has no-one out there used those Danelectro things? They're super cheap. C'mon - someone must know - are they shite or what?
 
I'm fond of the Dan-Echo from Danelectro. It's designed to sound like the old tape echos.
 
Back in the 70's the Japs made a great tape echo - Acetone, it was excellent, the idiot factor made me unload it for bugger all.
If you can get one of the Boss analog delays they are good, had one, got knocked off. But a couple of weeks ago I got a Johnson analog delay (very old Korean name Johnson) anyway it was dirt cheap and for most things absolute shit, but it has a great slapback, I did a gig with it on Sunday night, and I was in rock n roll heaven.
 
Acetone. Right - cheers cobber. I'll add that to the ol' mental list along with WEM and Melos. Out of interest, is that Acetone 1/4" like the WEM, or one of those weird little cassette guage cartridge affairs like the Melos? Oh, and on a completely unrelated side note I just read Peter Carey's 'True History of the Kelly Gang'. Wow - Ned ruled. Do people love him there? They should do!
 
I've got the Danelectro Delay (purple one, not the tiny pieces of crap). It works for me. Only problem is that sometimes it will distort a little if you really bang on the strings. I'm not sure if this intentional or not. It can be cool sometimes. But it would suck for when you want a real clean delay. I find you can get really cool retro reverb sounds with a little tweaking. Also the real long spacey delay. I liked it better than anything from Boss or Digitech.:D
 
Thanks dethska. Actually I just wrote a cheque out for a 'AXL analogue Echo' pedal. Cost me £40 - approx US$65 (?). So we'll see how that goes. The only thing I have to shoot it out with is the poxey PODII delay, which of course is digital. Whilst the POD echo does have a cool tap function, the ability to set the number of repeats is null, bupkiss and nada. Surely this AXL thing will be better.
