I have had a fostex 160 multitrack home studio for the last 20 years and it has recently bitten the dust. Does anyone know of any method/software that i can obtain to transfer the recordings to mp3 format so they are not entirely lost?

Your tapes can probably be transferred to digital perfectly. But you need a suitable 4 track cassette machine to play the tapes. There is no "software" that will play the tapes. The tapes are the software, in analog terms. You need hardware to play them.

When you say your Fostex has "bitten the dust" do you mean it is unrepairable or just needs repairing?

Cheers Tim

Thanks, thats what i thought unfortunately. Hopefully it just needs repairing but i live in a village in Nothants and i can't find anyone who knows enough to be able to fix it (playing mechanism seems to have stuck on with the tape in - will rewind and forward but won't play). Any info would be gratefully received.

Quite possibly it just needs a new belt or two fitted. The belts were the first things to go. They're usually still available. You might just need to find someone who's patient and good with small mechanical devices.

That might be the thing Tim. A bad belt can do crazy things.
