If you would not mind please check out the following MP3 of my band.

This is a "live" basement recording (our manager said he needed something yesterday)...we will be spending the next month or so doing some studio stuff, but it will be a while before we have any finished product.

Band: Joshua's Crossing
Instruments: Guitar, Keys, Bass, Drums
Song: Nothing Hurts Like Hell
Link:

Written by Jim Cabral

Recording Info: Live Take
Vocals: SM58
Guitar/Bass/Keys: Direct outs into mixer
Drums: Submix 1 (kick) SM 58 (for why see my post in microphones group)
Submix 2 (snare/hi-hat SM 57, Tom SM 57, overhead x 2 MC012)

I have my own thoughts about the mix, but am curious on others feedback.

Thanks in advance,

dhoch

Hey,

Cool Tune, Good performance. It sounded a bit on the thin side to me, not much bottom end at all. I also though the Wah Wah keyboard was cool, just a touch too up front in some spots. It took my attenion from the lead vocal. I am not a recording guru here, since I struggle with getting my own stuff to sound right I won't make and technical recommedations..

If you wouldnt mind giving a listen to mine, it is in the mixing clinic.

Bassman

Not really my kind of music, but...

vocals too bassey or something.

I like the keyboard main riff..it has like a Stevie Wonder feel...but then it loses that funky groove....

Sounds like an overall decent mix.

Thanks

Hey guys thanks for the replies.....I take another kick at it tonight or tommorow....

I think the most common thing I have had at feedback is that the keys are a bit over present (even from the keyboardist).

I agree with the thinness I think a lot of that comes from the drums (especially the lack of low end on the kick)...I have a better recording with a bit more low end kick.

I think that working on the other drum mix a better would also help.

Anyone else with comments?

nice cool song ! the recording will improve if you can get hold of better equipments i think !

hongteck,

I'm wondering just what you would consider getting as better equipment. I'm pretty happy with what I have, of course if I had a couple of extra grand to spend....

When our band goes to do real recording (next month). The main differences will be:

1) Better recording room, not a basement. Especially for vocals.
2) Drum mics will all be run seperate (i.e. not 1 in to the delta 1010 with 4 mics, but probably 5 or 6 discrete ins) Hopefully this will help the drum sound drasticaly.
3) A true kick mic will be used (AKG D112), if I can get this issue figured out (see my post in microphones for more).
4) Track each instrument seperatly so there will be no bleeding of other instruments into mics.
5) Multiple tracks of instruments (eg. DI, sm57, possible condensor of guitar).
6) Vocals will be done thru an NT 1.

My current setup when I do my home recordings is a Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro Preamps -> Delta 1010 -> Cakewalk.

My mic case is kind of limited (mostly due to live use): 2 x SM 57s, 2 x SM58s, 1 AKG D112, 1 Rode NT 1, 2 x Octava MC012.

Cool

I liked the song a lot though I thought the drums and bass were a tad weak sounding. Nice song though.

I really liked that. Sounds like a clean mix to me.

I liked the guitar solo and the panning. Nice.

hi dhoch,

nothing's wrong with your equipments. just notice that you didn't use them. eg the kick drum mic D112, the NT1 for vocals etc etc. also realised that you track that song LIVE instead, so that should explain the room for improvement. a bit more attention should get you there.

overall i like your stuff (where can i download more) keep it up !

I give all credit to the music (writing and style) to the author Jim Cabral, but thanks for the compliment.

I can only answer for some of the technical stuff, and the bass playing.

As for the recording yeah I know it's "live". Our manager needed something now (as he said he needed it yesterday). We as a group will be spending some time in the next 2-3 months doing a better recording (tracking seperatly, using D112, which worked much better during our second "live" session this past week, recording vocals, and getting 6 or 7 tracks of drums rather than 2, backing vocals, and some better takes of stuff)...Look for more at that time.

As for more "live" stuff, I should have a couple more mp3s (from last practice) in about a week or 2.

Hey, I thought that it sounded pretty cool, but this is coming from someone who's listening over really crappy speakers. I also record with four track cassette (TASCAM 414) and mix down with a boombox, or headphones, so what do I know? My only advice would be to record the guitar with a miked amp instead of direct, unless you have a POD, Sansamp, or a Morley JD-10 (my favorite). Other than that, I enjoyed it. Good luck! Trag.

Live recording

Way to go. This is a very good recording for a live performance. You can't expect a perfect studio mix when you are mixing live. This is done well.

Even though this music is not my bag, I do beleive the performers did well. The vocalist did a good job for live depending upon the amount of takes.

You may want to give the vocals special attention when you finally get into a studio. I find that on many Mp3's and home recordings (like my own), the vocals tend to be the most difficult to record and the vocalist needs to be on top of his or her game. It is so easy to overlook small pitch waivers and accenting the right words. Many times I hear a fantastic recording with awesome guitars and drums; then the vocals will come in flat and lifeless. Good luck and I wish I was as far as your band.

Very nice. I really enjoyed it. I think the mix could use more of a bottom, like more bass. The vocal is excellent, but it gets a little too dominant at times; for a live session, I think it's mostly a matter of paying attention to your mic technique (like back off a little, killer).
