...in search of The Holy Microphone! As a refugee Planeteer, I've got to say that I think I've gone to heaven in the wake of the death of a Planet with this forum. So, let's start out with a perennial q. that I'm pondering of late.

What's a good pair of small diaphragm condensers at ,say, $600 - $1000 for both? I don't feel the need to go to matched pairs particularly. And I'll need them to be real flexible---acoustic instruments through drum o/heads.

Thoughts?
 
Before anyone else says it octave mk012 www.oktava.com I think you can get matched pairs in your price range with a pile of extra capsules.... I love mine.

I have been known to recommend Oktatva mics in the past....but only from The Sound Room. As far as I know, I am the lone proponent of these mics. No one else ever says anything about them. No one.

Hey, rocky, I don't know this mic from experience, but I'll pass along the choice of a guy named Paul J Stamler in an article in the current (June 2000) issue of Recording magazine. He likes a pair of Shure SM81 small condensers for stereo recording, and they retail at under $300 each.

He also likes the Oktava MC012 and has some interesting stuff to say about them.
 
Check out the Neumann KM184s. Not sure what you're going to record with them, but I heard they're great for ac. guitar. I have one KM184 which I use with my AT4033 with great results on ac. gtr. A matched pair from Mercernary Audio might run just a bit over a grand. Good luck!

I think just about anything you buy in that price range will serve you well: SM81s, AT4041s, any of the mics mentioned above--these are all well-rounded workhorses. The 81s are my personal choice, but they're all fine. You can't go wrong with the Neumann, of course, but I might ask, Why spend even that much?
 
Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. A few I recognize (and often had forgotten about!), but some new info also.

George--I noticed that article in Recording. I haven't read it yet, so I'll make a point of doing that. Not familiar with the 81's, but have to feel good about going with a Shure product.

King and zeta--no, don't feel like you're the loners on the Oktava suggestion. A review a few months back in Recording brought these guys up in a very positive way. Understand that the biggest gripe has been sheer variability from unit to unit. But the Sound Room approach seems to answer that. I do prefer to buy solid gear that I then use for years and years...so, I wonder how these Oktava's will fare comparatively to a Shure, AT, or Neumann 10 years down the road? Can you give me an appraisal of their construction quality and ruggedness?

Now, how about back to the question at hand...anyone have any idea how these Oktava's are holding up under use?

Many thanks for the references. Yes, I'm guilty of not taking the time to look at old threads yet, so thanks for posting the info yet again.

I did stumble into something called the Evidence Locker, or some such thing. Some nasty old stuff lurking in there, for sure...
 
And if you really want to know about how the Oktavas will hold-up down the road, I suggest you talk to Taylor Johnson from The Sound Room. He'll give you what he truely thinks in regards to long term dependability; I highly value his opinion. He'll be back in the US on the 7th.
