:D Tooshay!Of course I didn't mean any disrespect to the fellows here at Home Recording by saying that.
Nor did I mean to imply any disrespect. I was afraid what I was saying might be mis-interpreted.

I was in no way talking directly to you, Lee, nor was I pointing any fingers at you for posting what you did. On the contrary, I'm grateful and thankful that you did. :)

I was just using your post as an offering of evidence to point out and unfortunate fact of life, that one tends to listen to those whose names they recognize over others, regardless of the content of their words.

I guess I just really wanted to give a Happy New Year shout out to the hundreds or thousands of quality experienced engineers, editors and producers out there, many of whom I have met in my travels in the industry, who are the Rodney Dangerfields of our business for the sole reason that they are not one of the few to have their names printed on items sold at Wal Mart. Some of us DO listen. :)

Happy happy Joy joy to all the red ties out there!

Ahh! Gotcha :)

Happy News to you too, buddy!

I don't think of Bob Katz as a "celebrity". He's a guy that really knows what he is doing, a brilliant mind. Any famous-ness he may have is something he earned strictly from the quality of his work. I own his book "Mastering Audio" and it is truly a great book on the subject. If he says something I'll listen, strictly because of the quality of his work and his thinking.

Also, as far as "recipes", I don't want recipes and I highly doubt Bob Katz gave anything to Lee in the form of a "recipe". Also, regarding any advice Bob Katz gave Lee, I in no way expect or desire him to share it here. That was something generous that he did especially for Lee, and if Lee wants to keep it for himself that's totally cool by me.

The way Lee shares it is by applying the lessons he learned in that session to his future work, and then later on by mentoring other young people coming up who he thinks have potential. Any of us that work in this field professionally have a lot of people to thank, whether it be teachers or mentors or those who have given us a break. The way to thank them is of course *to thank them and return the favor when possible*, but also to pass it on to others when appropriate.

I don't care for those that deliberately withhold information that could be of help to others, but by the same token I don't think that anyone has the obligation to share everything they know either. It's kind of a fine line.

I personally believe in open sharing as much as possible because if it helps others make their music better then that is all good. I mean, I'm the one who has to listen to it, you know? ;) But again, there are some things you don't or can't really share for a variety of reasons.

1st: This is a bumb of a great thread, I hope nobody minds...

2nd: This shows clearly that Mr. Katz and many other out there are really into teaching others what they've learned during their livetime. I'm sure that even a word-for-word report of the event would not bring to the reader what it brought for Mr. Lee.. The atmosphere, the situation, the 'beeing there' is all important to appriciate the value of the 'lessons' Mr. Katz offered to Mr. Lee properly.

I'm sure that 'Mastering' by Mr. Katz did sell pretty good and that the lessons could be really valuable for the reader. But only if the words and practicing with the techniques are transfered from the mind to the 'heart and ears'. I bet that only a tiny part of all the readers of the book got from it what Mr. Katz intended. I'm sure that I'm one of the big chunk that don't get it by far (yet). Doesn't matter really.. I really love the way the 'tools of the trade' are shared by many experts and others on these online boards and in various books.. For me it's clear that it's all in the ears and heart, seen it often enough.. This cannot be learned via the mind only, the heart has to 'grab' it..

I wish it would be easy... it's not.

I'd like to join the ranks thanking you for sharing that experience; it was very generous of you and Katz.

I'm so glad to hear you take the basic and "holistic" stuff of his to heart. There is one passage that really strike a chord related to these forums, I think:
There are two real nuggets here. The first is his "just remember" comment, which is as true as it gets. The second is your following comment about it coming from "any other engineer".

The bittersweet fact behind the combination of these nuggets is that apparently one does not know what they are talking about unless they have a big name; experience itself is meaningless. There are folks who are regulars on this board like Bruce, Tom, John, Al and Jason* who have great knowledge and experience who say here on a dialy basis the very thing(s) Katz said to Lee.

The difference is when these guys say something like "ride with the mix and listen to what's going on", they get flamed left and right by newbs who think they are just blowing smoke or keeping secrets or just don't know what they're talking about. If the amount of experience any of these folks has is brough up, then the response often (not always) that these guys are too old and just not hip enough to get respect for their opinions. Not because of what they say - that's rarely even taken into consideration - but rather because they were not lucky enough by virtue of circumstance to have cut their teeth on Sunset Boulivard or Beale Street and gotten some gold record names under their belts; therefore they must not know what they're talking about anymore than the newbs here do. But when someone like Katz comes along and says the exact same thing, it suddenly sounds like a Revalation passed down from the Mount.

I'd also like to note that nowhere in Lee's posts re The Katz Encounter were any kind of specific recipies mentioned. Lee, I assume that's because they never came up and not that you're leaving them out? I think that's important to note, and also it's important to note that nobody, including Lee, is complaining about any lack of such mythical "recipies" to come out of a 2.5 hour brain picking with a celebrity name. :)

This rant is not addressed to you, Lee, or to anybody specifically. Just an open letter to the forum, I guess. :)

G.

* Don't get pissed or otherwise hurt if I didn't include your name; there are others here whose opinions I respect as well. I just couldn't feasibly list all of them...my posts are long enough! :D )

im suprised you dont have anything negative to say about Mr Katz's advice.

Middleman,

I've been reading Behind The Glass by Howard Massey

One of my favorites. Take note of the many producers who use and recommend some low end gear. Off the top of my head I remember David Bowies producer saying he uses Behringer compressors! I also remember TC and Zoom products being mentioned as well as the old Black Face DATs that now go for around $100, if that, on ebay. Alanis' producer used them and the onboard A/D converters on "Pill" as well as a whole bunch of cheap gear. I'd recommend that book to everyone.

If you're talking about Tony Visconti(sp?) and his work on the "Heros" album, he also used metal ash trays and garbage cans as instruments. That don't turn them into Steinways.

OTOH, his trick for using long-distance room miking in a warehouse through a gated array was quite cool.

That was not directed at you.

It was directed at the self proclaimed know it all.

First off, you are the only one proclaiming that, I never said anything like that. I have been wrong many times. You're just pouting like a child because I called you on one boneheaded post you made a week ago and your scary stalker signature wasn't enough to stop me from doing so, and because I have cut off your private messages wanting to be my "private friend".

If you don't stop your electronic stalking routine pretty soon, penguin boy, this is going to turn ugly in an official way.

Bring it on sweetie.

But please be my private friend.

I need you so bad.

I practically begged you to be my friend privately.

But you said no.

I have no friends. Can you blame me for needing you.

You think its because of that 1 post, i don't like you.

You can morph the situation into what ever you wish.

The fact is, i find this hilarious.

There is no one on this planet who can hate me more than I hate me.

I make love to mum regularly.

I know i should have been drowned at birth and suicide is a daily thought for me.

Yes I'm a loser and i eat poo.

I'm just a spastic penguin on a long march.

So please please please SSG

do your worst.

He made many major label albums using some cheap ass Behringer gear, albums that have sold millions, singles that have been hits. If you're too moronic to understand the scope of what that means, then keep scratching your head like a monkey and farting all day.

It should also be noted that Chuck Ainlay also uses some cheap home consumer gear.

"Ainlay also brings along three large racks of his own gear. These hold an impressive array of processing tools, including select vintage goodies, premium recent-model EQs, and some units often found in home studios (for example, an Alesis D4, Akai S1000, and Ensoniq DP/2)"

Then again what the hell does he know? :D

Another SouthSidelenGlen supporter.

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

Thanks for the memories Lee. I've been a fan of BK for a long time and am truly jealous :)

Edan, I don't have time right now for yet another complete misunderstanding of what I'm saying. If you knew the cheap, basic equipment I'm operating off of here in my home studio, you'd know I am no gear snob.

Maybe you missed it but we have a guy on here threatening suicide. I think that's far more important than some stupid gear war. Now please, let's hold off on the name calling and the esoteric arguments over who uses what gear for what purpose. If you want to have a bar argument over a beer on this stuff LATER, I might oblige you...maybe. It just is not important at this moment in this thread. OK?

Pingu, relax and take a deep breath. Nobody here hates you. And you do have friends here. Just relax and take a step back, OK? Does everybody on this thread agree with me on that one?

G.

wow

I envy you in every way my young friend that was a spectacular read & I hope you go far

I like the sound of your stuff as well I got a thing for Herbie although I've never heard of the other dude
