Folks may not be aware, but I've a son that also writes and performs. If he ever takes himself on the road, he's going to have to get another stage name, as I believe Bryan White has already been taken.

Below is a piece he recorded live. There are minor phase issues ... (my bad), but you'll get a sense of his style. There's not much to comment on on the mix (aside from the aforementioned issue), because it's simply guitar and vocal. Hope you enjoy!

Phase issues are only slightly noticeable in mono. Not a big deal. Nice playing and singing.

I think you could bring the vocal down just a bit.

Guitars seem a bit too bright for my tastes. Like 5K-10K was hyped.

Things are a bit dry. Just a bit.

K-dub,

Nice work there. Your son is very talented. I'm digging the rawness. Honestly, all the mix talk aside. The "soul" is pretty deep within the notes.

Went a little on the deep end there : ).

Good job. I'm sure I'd like it even more coming through my monitors as opposed to laptop speakers.

This was done live w/ two small diaphragm condensers for the guitars and a single tube for the vocal. The bleed in both is fierce. I did hike the upper end on the guitar mics, so I'll have to address and tame. The issue with the dry is trying to keep both sources balanced ... so I added some reverb to the vocal mic, but left the guitar dry so as to provide more definition. Two ever-so-slightly out of phase + two reverbs providing associated reflections ever-so-slightly out of phase = Sonic mush.

Since it's live and there is so much bleed ... there really is limited control on the guitar/vocal levels --- the recording is what it is. On the bright side, it was a one take shot, so tracking to only as long as it took to play it. :)

Interesting. If you knew the back story to the song, you'd understand while listening that his delivery is authentically heartfelt ... something that must have translated into the recording itself -- the raw feeling accurately captured.

Thanks for the comments, Tom.

Your son does have a great style and songwriting ablity. He sounds very much at ease with what he plays and sing. Kudos!!!!

Kev,

I'd love to hear the back story one day if you get time, PM me sometime.

It's pretty straightforward, and involves the end of a long tumultuous relationship with a bright, cute, articulate train wreck of an individual.

Part of his talent lies in his lyrical abilities.

Has anyone ever seen the TV ad for the juicer called "The Magic Bullet"? He was challenged to write a song about it.

Got me laughing good sir, lol.

This was after he flipped his car several times and met up with a telephone pole that landed inches behind his head on the eve of my birthday two years ago.

"Our Home" was recorded a year following his survival.

Every picture has a story ... :)
