Insane Genious!
I'm thinking of buyin an amp. It will probably only be used for recording, so it doens't have to be big, just sound good. Basic guitar amp with a nice distortion. The budget is a couple of 100 bucks I guess. Probably no more that $500. I have no problems with buying second hand.

Where should I start?
 
I have a Yamaha DG100-212 (twin celestions). It is very versatile and has an amazing tone. It is a modelling-type amp, providing a great deal of flexibility... although the 212 is up there in price, there is a little brother version of that model with a single driver (DG80-212??) which may fall within your price range.

That's one suggestion - the other would be getting a POD type device (if it's for recording only, that may be the most practical and flexible solution). I must admit though, as much as I like using the POD Pro for many kinds of dirty sounds, the clean sounds are not a good as the sound of a mic'd up amp.

To me, the POD just doesn't sound like a miced amp. It sounds like a fuzzbox. A very flexible and versatile fuzzbox, but still a fuzzbox...

On of the Line6 amps wouldn't hurt though. :)
 
I tried the Line 6 amps when I was shopping around - I compared them to the Yamaha and the Yamaha won hands-down. I was using my Guild semi on the test amps and the Line 6 clean tones didn't cut it.... the Yamaha gave beautiful bell-like tones on picked notes.... it was striking... no other amp has been able to give me that response...

But.... everyone's different - I personally think you're going to have a hard time buying an amp using other people's opinion - you really need to test them side by side to get a decent perspective. Not sure if you said you play guitar yourself or not, but if you don't, get a decent guitar-playing buddy to go with you shopping! (Trust me, guitarists LOVE doing that!!!! ;) )

Of course I'm going to try it, I just need hints on what to try, really. :) I do play guitar, and I WILL bring guitar-playing buddies too. :)

OK, Yamaha DG60-112 on the check-list!
Thats the only one in the series near my budget.

If used stuff is ok,I recommend a tiny tube amp.The secret to tube amp tone where distortion is concerned is to run them full blast so that the output tubes are saturated.A 6-10 watt amp like a champ type can sound HUGE (zeppelin I was page through an vox ac30)on tape.
I have a custom 100 watt tube amp I play on stage.But for recording I use an 18 watt Gibson amp from the 50s.I prefer an amp to only do that one thing.Then I use other dedicated devices for reverb,delay etc.
I'm not so brand concious like "go buy this model".But I am biased toward vintage gear.And lots of tracks over the years have come to us from Champs,Princetons,Deluxes and other smaller amps.
