The Way It Moves
I'm browsing around Guitar Center (online) looking at amp stands. Am I going to notice any differences between the $20 and the $50 stand? Would I be better off just building one?

Thanks!

I believe the $50. stand has more adjustable heights so as to face it more to your head (where your ears are) and not at your ankles and groin area (where your ears shouldn't be ----- At least not while your on stage playing guitar) whoa wait a minuet what a great gimmick I'm going to try that out.

The more expensive stands are probably made of a little heavier guage metal. Depending on the weight of your amp you might be able to get by with the cheaper model.

I've been wanting to build one, as I have this innovative idea for a collapsible stand that can do multiple tilt angles. It would only be for raising your amp no more than 8"-10" inches...but with several tilt angles so that you can aim it where you like.
I don't like the real high stands where they place the amp in your face. Most of the less expensive ones that I've looked at only have a single, preset angle...and IMO, it's often a crappy angle, and the more expensive ones that have multiple angles all look like some torture device from the Dark Ages! :D

I want to do something out of wood...that also looks nice and gives off a nice vibe when you place your amp on it, instead of the "amp on stilts" look...
...but it's just a question of getting around to building it.
I guess when I get to playing out again, that will motivate me. ;)

Get a chair and some trailer ties. ;)

In all seriousness, if you have skills to build one, do it. If you get it right you will be much more satisfied. If not, I'd shell out a few extra bucks for the more expensive stand, just to ensure you get EXACTLY what you want.

I have a couple of these. A few of my friends have seen me with them and bought them, too.

I used to use a folding rental theater chair that I swiped from a gig in about 1987. I liked it because it folded flat and held the amp at an angle 16 inches off the floor.

But, ill-gotten gain, ya know. Probably why I never became the beatles. :(
