K i have an AVT275 at the mo, which is great for any tone you like except the one i use all the time, metal, i.e killswitch, caliban, etc. What kinda amps do these guys use to get that crunchy ass, high gain low noise, pinch harmonic inducing tones???!

Peavey.

Peavey 5150--- errr... Peavey 6505... it USED to be the 5150 until EVH stopped endorsing Peavey.. so they kept the rights to the circut board and created the Peavey 6505.. get one.. 120w Tube head.. not too expensive either.. you can get a used 5150 for around 500 i think..

Killswitch Engage use Mesa Boogie dual rec heads and cabinets.
Caliban use Engle Powerball Heads and Mesa Boogie cabinets.

Which is all very well if you have the money to spend.

I personally use an old Marshall Valvestate and it sounds awesome for metal, and has exactly the sound I want, ie Caliban, Killswitch Engage lol. Planning on upgrading to the Marshall Mode Four, which at about £1000 for head and cabinet together is a bargain compared to the price you pay for Mesa Boogies.

Follow up--

I don't know if I'd go for the 5150 II (6505+) over the original.. the II has less gain and more features.. but the original has so much fricken gain... you don't even NEED any signal boosters.. you might not even need to crank the gain all the way to get your tone.. EVH used em, Darkest Hour, Stampin' Ground.. All That Remains, Since The Flood.. Bunch of others I'm sure.. the amp is a favorite among metal/hardcore bands..

I'm sorry..but the 5150 II definitely has more gain than 5150....that is the entire premise of the model. ;)
The 5150 probably has all the gain you'd ever need, but the 5150 II definitely has more.

Take your pick form here. If this cannot satisfy your tone-search you need to pick up another instrument.......................as we can no longer help you here..............or take some years of serious guitar-lessons.................

Although I love most of the amps in Timmermans picture for my own music, I don't see one in there I'd use if I was playing metal.:)

if you want pure metal..you need mesa or krank amps for sure.
Both are pricey as hell though ,...you have been warned!
Also..keep in mind..the guys you hear have loads of rack stuff and the engineers have done there magic to get it to sound that way.
I dont think youll get that polished guitar sound straight from a single amp by itself.
KRANK AMPS
MESA BOOGIE

Rectumfrier. I love my Rectoverb. It's a single rectifier and it's PLENTY.

Oh hell...every once in awhile I have a hankerin' for a good ole' fashioned head bangin', I get the dual recto mesa out. Turn it up about half way up and the nerves in your teeth start tingle  . Turn it up a little more and feed it with a tubescreamer the tone gets rather...shall we say brittle or maybe shrill would be a better description. Bump the bottom up and you can chugg out some crunchy rhythm that sounds like an old style locomotive driving up your a$$! with intent to straighten out your lower intestines. At this point I usually develop a splitting headache and feel a little guilty because the dog is in the back yard hiding under the bushes and usually stays there for a couple days.

I would encourage you and everyone to go out this weekend to your nearest GC and ask to see a mesa dual recto and a 4x10 cabinet and put it through the above described test. To doubly ensure that this is the tool for you I would further recommend that you play tri-tone harmonized mixolydian scales in every key. This way you'll be able to really appreciate the detail of the rich harmonic over-tones developed by the over-driven tubes. Don't be shy...no no no...these things were meant to be played loud...in fact they won't sound good until you really give em hell. The GC staff will of course want you to be a satisfied customer and will likely give you a killer price after about 10 minutes once they realize your a serious buyer with a taste for finer things.

The Peavey JS...not so much the same sort of animal.

For metal, I love a miked up Mesa Triple Rectifier... but I have to say a Marshall JCM2000 TSL is killer as well. Also, I just recently heard a mode four and was very impressed.

Depends what kind of metal sound you are after I guess. It is hard to go wrong with Mesa Boogie or a Marshall JCM 2000. But then again, Dimebag said in a few different interviews that the best way to get 'mega gain' is with solid state amps, and in a way it is kinda true.

Randalls are hard to beat for super gain, 'harmonicy' type distortion as long as you can live with the somewhat sterile sound of a solid state pre-amp. Some metal sounds better that way, it just depends on what you like.

Marshall Superlead??

NOt enough tonal options? Add an EQ pedal, and perhaps some distortion pedals, but it should be able to give you good and ugly tones :D

Marshall...are...shit....for playing metal. They good for anything else, but not that. Whens the last time you saw a metal band playing though one?? (No, not Iron Maiden.)

You've got to be kidding me......
I would consider Marshall among the amps MOST associated with metal, unless you're talking about A-tuned sludge-fest crap nu-metal or something like that, and I have seen countless stages covered with Marshalls.....
If you can't get good metal tone out of a Marshall than you don't know what you're doing anyway. (unless you're talking about some new valvestate piece of shit.......are you assuming a tube Marshall would sound like your AVT275?... )
They may not be your favorite sound, but to say that they are shit for metal is just rediculous.
