can anyone tell me what the usual signal chain in a solid state amp is?

when you have an amp with no effects loops or processors its always preamp > power amp.

but when you have an effects loop where does it sit in the chain? fx > preamp > power amp? or preamp > fx > poweramp?

The FX loop is between the Preamp Stage and the Power Amp Stage. The effects you should consider putting in the FX loop are Reverbs and Delays. Some of these effects are made to operate best with a line level signal, but not always. The key is to experiment. Some friends of mine put an EQ pedal in the FX loop to have more control over the sound rather than use the normal three-band EQ on the amp.

The key is to experiment. See how different effects sound in front of the amp and in the effects loop, some will sound the exact same, others will be noticeably different. I personally like my delays in front of the amp, but when recording I wind up doing both. In my noise rig I used to have an EHX Big Muff Russian in the FX loop, which was stupid (and stupid loud).

Is this sort of related to your "Metal Head" thread, like as getting a multi-effects pedal with a good/reasonable metal tone and using it as a preamp into the power amp on the Marshall you have now?

I hope not. You'll likely have no control over the volume. I'm not sure how your marshall works, but if I plug straight into the power amp in of my hot rod deville the only gain control i have is the gain pots on my pedals.

Multi-FX pedals are designed and marketed to the bedroom warriors... I seriously doubt you're going to be able to get enough gain out of it to replace the amplifer's pre... but... hey... i could be wrong... try plugging it in.

actually it was. and i was going to.

but then i decided against it since i hated the marshall tone and amp simulators suck and nothing in the world could fix either of those problems. (if you like marshalls i apologize)

its time for me to get a tube amp. :D
