AMD or Pentium for audio??

You're missing the point here Its not about stupid users, but bad design/engineering.

My point is that the Athlons weren't designed to run without a heatsink and fan, just like the PIV weren't designed to run in an oven at 250°C. In both cases the question is : why would the engineers bother to make the chip able to run in abnormal circumstances???

Ok, I wouldn't consider a CPU fan burning out an abnormal circumstance. All that it would take would be a build up of dust or defective fan motor to make it crap out on you. I've seen my share of shorted out/poorly attached CPU fans over the last two years working in a computer related field (most of them being Compaq's).

While your Althon burns/melts away to nothing and your money goes up in smoke, my (soon to be bought) P4 is smart enough to turn itself off until you have the cance to fix the problem.

I have a Pentium 4 @ 1.2 GHZ 128 Ram at the moment, would it make sense or a difference if i get a AMD computer?

Whoa, 1.2Ghz? I didn't know they made em that slow. That's like the equivelant of an 800Mhz P3. That's still pretty fast though (I still get by with dual 366Mhz Celerons). I would add a considerable amount of RAM though. If you're doing audio work, 128MB is kinda weak - but you could still get by.

VIA chipsets caused a few problems a long time ago, not now. If you are having trouble with a via, update the bios and drivers.

IF your worried about fan failure, thier are plenty of programs out there that will shut down the machine if it starts getting hot. Most motherboards come with such a program.

AMD CPU's are considerably faster for the money, and are plenty compatible.

I run an xp1800 and a IWILL motherboard, delta 1010. No problems at all.
