I am about to upgrade, and those AMD prices are so tempting I am thinking about throwing away my old P3 and starting from scratch again. Any ideas? Thinking about something that handles DDR and and the new USB 2 technology. I need some suggestions. Thanks alot. And oh- if AMD processors and cubase play together well, I will need some motherboard and RAM suggestions as well. Thanks again!

Pre-Athlon, there were some "authorities" (Millward, for one) who said AMD rigs were not good for Cubase. There were also some early VIA chipset problems on some AMD boards.

As of today, I don't know of any real Cubase troubles with AMD CPUs or better motherboards.

There are certainly a few Cubase bugs, but these do not seem to have anything to do with AMD CPUs.

I am using a 1.4GHz/266 Athlon in an ASUS A7M266 motherboard (with the AMD 761 chipset) with 512M of Crucial DDR memory.

While I am still struggling with learning Cubase, as far as I know I have never had any trouble resulting this CPU/MB/Memory combo. I researched pretty heavily before buying this setup and on the hole this was considered a good platform for what I was trying to do. There are cheaper motherboards, but this one has a lot of people using it for recording with good results.

Unfortunately, memory has taken a HUGE jump in price in the past couple of weeks, but everything else seems affordable.

This is the best I can do for you, but you might want to check on the forums at www.cubase.net for more expert opinion.

Hope this helps.

Ive got a 1 Gig Athlon with an A7V133. seems to work fine, go DDR and get the latest stuff. (more XP compatability)

My Via chipset has given me a bit of welly so I'd probly avoid them if i was to upgrade.

Thanks guys. Hopefully others will join in with similar experiences. I hope that ram takes another big fall!

Cubase and amd's work fine together. Cubase 5.1 is optimized for amd athlons and athlonXP's. i have a amd athlonxp 1600+ on a a7v266. works perfect. o 768 mb of ddr ram too. i don't have any problems with the system, XPPro, nor my delta 1010. if you upgrade to an amd, get a athlonXP and load up XPPro. you don't even have to tweak XPPro really with AthlonXp chips. i just run the app. TweakXP and my system runs so fast.

I also understand that even the early VIA chipset problems are reparable with downloadable upgrades from the MB manufacturers.

Don't be a knucklehead like me! Always keep up with your new downloads/drivers/flashes!

Check it out: I originally got my A7M266 with a boxed 1.2GHz Athlon, and when I upgraded my office computer with a boxed 1.4GHz CPU and a cheapie Soyo MB, I put the 1.4GHz CPU in my dedicated recording computer and took the 1.2GHz and put it in the office computer.

It was TWO MONTHS before I realized that I needed to do the latest ASUS flash for the MB in order to use an Athlon over 1.2GHz. Did it. Works fine.
