Ambient micing?

Man what a bunch of bickering little man-babies. Come children, come hither and suckle on the sweet teets of sweetnubs. One on my left, one on my right: all will be right with the world. Oh, i've been stoked with some of my room mic recordings lately. Been using a pair of omni earthworks (i think the m30 measurement mic thingy) I put one on each wall of my room with the diaphragm super close, like millimeters like okay. It makes like a fab makeshift high quality Pzm. Then I pan those hott bitches out into stereo. Freakin' hott! I run them through my UA 2-610 with a little overdrive. Hott! I like a lot of small diaphragm condensers more than the earthworks but they are fine mics. I'd recomend getting an omni to pick up your room. Remember if your room sounds like crap it ain't gonna sound good no matter what mic you get unless you get a different room or maybe treat the one you have.

There you go. I stuck my QTC's on a hard wall right behind the kit on a small box-for-stage remote. It was still a pig-of-a-200hz booming stage, but the kit was coherent by god.

The 57's worked "ok" up against the outer walls about three feet out in the room but they didnt quite have the quality sound Im looking for, kinda boxy, Im gonna try the 012's again up against the wall behind the drums stereo panned tonight, Ill report back.... And by the way, my room is treated using specs and info provided by Steve "knightfly" from the studio building forum here at HR.com. Keep the relavent suggestions coming and try to keep the bullshit to a minimum..... Thanks!

Im using 703 from floor to ceiling in all four corners, all along the walls and most of the ceiling is treated also. I have floating "clouds" of 703 in each gable, acoustc foam, (Auralex) on the door and along the wall opposing the montors. About a 60/40 ratio of treatment to reflective surface. If you want, do a search on "Black Hole Studio pics" That should give you an idea of where it was at in the begining, theres probably three times as much treatment in the room now and fixin to be more added this week....
Ok, I tried the 57's against the outter walls about 8' out in the room and 3' high along with the 012's to either side of the drum kit at about 2' high and an inch or so from the wall. This configuration seems to work pretty damn good! Panning left and right seems to clean up the signal and most of the boominess is gone... Im gonna try other configurations using different mics during the week. I might try a single V67 behind the drums pointing towards the wall... Ill report back with the results.

Don, I got mine from www.spi-co.com We have one here localy. I paid like $1.55 per square foot for the two inch, shit aint cheap,,, I dont know how much for the one inch. Panels come in 2'x 4' pieces. I used plain old black bedsheets to cover them with. Lemmee know if you need any more info!

Yeah, I know it's not cheap... I have a lot of 703 in the old studio walls... but now I need more for the ceiling (acoustic hangers) in our new studio... so I'm shopping for the best price. Thanks for the info.
